Day 10 of 3 week Iceland trip

Today we were going to visit some famous sites. First we drove to Reykholt, well known because of Snorri Sturluson, writer, politician and judge. There was a beautiful little chapel. In 2001 it had been restored. We had lunch on the riverbanks of Reykjadalsá.

We continued to Surtshellir, some old lava tunnels that stretch out for miles. It is advised to have a torch per person and a helmet, or at least a cap, to give some protection against falling rocks. I went in with an Icelandic Mrs, our partners stayed behind. I used my diving video torch with 3500 lumen wide angel; it lit up the entire tunnel, the headlight of my companion looked like a match.

We climbed in for 20 minutes before we decided to return.

Next we visited the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, two entirely different falls and both impressive in their own way. Sorry that I cannot describe them, I can only advise to watch my Youtube films to get the impression. However nothing is like the real thing.

After the falls we continued on the 550 “Kaldidalur” gravel road, the scenery was beautiful. As we arrived at Þingvellir we had a walk through the “Almannagjá , it was quite fresh and we had the feeling the Alþing in the old days was maybe a bit less comfortable then todays parliament seats, no wonder politicians in those days were devoted to their goals.

The flies in Þingvellir were a pest.
