As winter slowly resides and releases its stronghold on Iceland I thought I’d share with you some pictures of winter in Iceland.

Ice caves near Vatnajokull in southeast Iceland

This picture was taken on a tour which I got here through Guide to Iceland that was fairly long, 9 days, and where my group really got to know what Iceland is made of during the wintertime. For me personally I’m very happy if I get one good image a day in tour like this. Not necessarily a great image, just a good one. If we put that in to perspective it’s actually quite an achievement to maintain that. The best light as most photographers know is around sunrise and sunset. You typically only manage to shoot one location for sunrise and then another one for sunset. So that means two locations per day to get one good image. Take into the account that the weather can be unpredictable in the wintertime but to me that is part of the adventure.

Of course it helps enormously that the sun is quite low in the sky during the Icelandic winter so you often get the chance to grab something good during the day as well. It’s still very good achievement to manage one image a day. This for me is especially applicable during the winter months when days are shorter.

Winter is gone, summer is here!

When working for other photographers my goal is always to help them to the best of my ability to achieve this goal. That means that my shooting comes last and I normally won’t break out the camera until everybody is happy and hopefully on the way to capture something great!

Spring is upon us and summer is fast approaching bringing with it new adventures. During high summer the sun doesn’t set below the horizon giving us photographers wonderful opportunities to photograph places that might be packed with people during the day, at nighttime. The interior of Iceland also becomes more accessible with all its magic.

Even if your only goal is to make good photographs, the value of being in new foreign country should not be underestimated. During the day there are plenty of opportunities to experience Iceland in other ways when the light might not be at it’s best. Warm natural pools to enjoy and can be found in various places in Iceland are just one example. For those truly dedicated to their camera I would encourage to take lots of travel photos as well as these can become great memories in the future.
