Description

Marvel over the depths of the earth with this exploration of Leiðarendi Cave on the Reykjanes Peninsula. This half-day tour should not be missed by those seeking adventure and a unique experience.

You will be picked up from Reykjavík in the morning, and driven half an hour from the city to the cave. The Reykjanes Peninsula is a stretch renowned for its lava landscapes and many iconic volcanoes.

Once you reach the cave, you will be provided with a helmet, torch and crampons if necessary, and be provided with the rules of caving, namely to stay behind your guide and not to touch any of the delicate, irreplaceable features within. Following this, you will be led to the twin entrances, and clamber down into the dark underground depths.

Leiðarendi lava tube is about 900 metres long, consisting of two caves that connect and form a circular path. One of these caves was formed in an eruption two millenniums ago, and the other one millennium ago.

The formations within are many and fascinating. You can expect to see many stalactites hanging from the ceiling, some as small as raindrops and the some huge and bizarre, and stalagmites rising from the jagged earth. In winter, you will see more of both of these in the form of ice sculptures.

Leiðarendi is more adventurous than many other caves. If your group is able to do the full circle, you will need to stoop, crawl, clamber and maybe even roll to navigate the whole course. This means that this tour is only recommended for those who are comfortable on their feet, and not too afraid of small spaces.

After an hour or so within the cave, you will return to Reykjavík, with enough time to make plans for the rest of your day.

Don’t miss this subterranean adventure. Check availability by choosing a date.
