Location & Nearby
Sandur is located in Thorshofn, Northeast Iceland. The building is right on the harbor, meaning it’s a good destination if you want to head out onto the water. There are good fishing facilities and lovely hikes in this area, as it’s part of the Arctic Coast Way.
The village of Thorshofn is small but has beautiful ocean views. The guesthouse owns a restaurant just across the street that serves delicious food. There’s also a small convenience store in the village and a tourist information center. Thorshofn has its own airport, which has flights to and from Akureyri and Vopnafjordur.
The village is on the edge of the Langanes Peninsula, with several interesting attractions. The Thorshofn plane wreck is only 4 miles (7 kilometers) from the guesthouse, next to Saudaneskirkja church. The Storkarl sea stack and the Skoruvikurbjarg cliffs are 21 miles (35 kilometers) away — this is a lovely place to go hiking and bird-watching. At the very edge of the peninsula is a lovely viewing point at Fontur, with a pretty lighthouse.
The Raudanes cape is also within driving distance of Sandur. This stretch of coastline, 18 miles (30 kilometers) from the guesthouse, has a gorgeous hiking trail with ocean views and several unusual rock formations.
Facilities & Amenities
The Sandur guesthouse is set within a historic building; it was formerly a Danish merchant house, but it was renovated in 2018 into a beautiful guesthouse. It’s been finished to a high standard, with a focus on comfort and coziness. Interior decor includes beach-themed artwork that brings the outside in and reminds guests of the beautiful seascape right outside.
There’s a choice of rooms available, meaning the guesthouse is well suited to everyone, from backpackers and couples to families. Choose from a budget double room with shared bathroom access or a double room with a private bathroom. There are also family rooms that can sleep four guests, split over two floors and with a private bathroom.
The property has free Wi-Fi, and there’s an outdoor terrace where guests can enjoy the views. Just across the street is a restaurant run by the same owners. Here, guests can enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a drink. Food is authentic and local, but there are pizzas on offer too.
Sandur also has kayaks available for hire. You can rent your own kayak for the day or head out on a guided bay tour. It’s a wonderful place for bird-watching and seal-watching, or just relaxing on the water. There’s something for everyone.
