Location & Nearby
Along the Ring Road 45 miles (72 kilometers) west of Reykjavik, this farm stay is perfectly positioned for travelers looking for a rural base near Selfoss, a hugely popular cultural hub in southwest Iceland. Despite the quick 1.8 miles (2.9 kilometers) drive from Highway 1, the location feels like a world away, with Icelandic horses, family dogs, and other animals viewable from right outside the doors of your accommodation. You’ll also find a geothermally heated swimming pool, a famous traditional Icelandic hot dog stand (Pylsuvagninn Selfossi), wonderful ice cream (Huppa), and Tryggvaskali restaurant, which serves traditional Icelandic cuisine in an atmospheric historic building dating to 1890 with beautiful views of Olfusa River.
The countryside around Asahraun Guesthouse is loaded with some of Iceland’s most popular attractions, including the must-see Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, whose astounding geological features are the result of a rift valley located between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates; the Geysir geothermal area, home to the geyser from which all other geysers get their name (Great Geysir) along with its highly-eruptive neighbor, Strokkur; and the terraced Gullfoss waterfall, which features falling water tumbling down two drops from an overall height of 105 feet (32 meters).
Other popular activities within easy reach of Asahraun include hiking at Hekla volcano (55 miles, or 88 kilometers, east), river bathing, and horseback riding at Reykjadalur Steam Valley (18.6 miles, or 30 kilometers, northwest) and several golf courses and wool centers.
This is just 69 miles (111 kilometers) from Iceland’s international airport at Keflavik.
