The Natural Wonders of the Westfjords of Iceland - Látrabjarg and Rauðasandur
While spending 9 days in the Westfjords on my summer vacations I joined Westfjords Adventures on a guided tour of two of the main attractions in the Westfjords: Látrabjarg bird-cliff and Rauðasandur the Red Sand. Westfjords Adventures is the only travel operator in the southern part of the Westfjords - offering a very good selection of tours to some pretty amazing sights in the Westfjords of Iceland. They are located in Patreksfjörður village, the biggest village in the southern part of the Westfjord Region. Top photo: a puffin at Látrabjarg Westfjord Road signs leading to Látrabjarg an
The friendly Hotel West in Patreksfjörður Village in the Westfjords of Iceland
What I like to do when I travel around Iceland is to get to know the locals in each part of Iceland. That way I get to learn so much more about my country. I do this by visiting the local museum in each village, as almost every village and town in Iceland has got at least one museum. I have found that the older generation, in particular, is very knowledgeable about Iceland, and I love to sit and listen and learn more. And then I write about my experiences here on Guide to Iceland and tell you about all the things I have learnt and seen on my travels :) Top photo: having coffee with Jóhan
Visiting Grímsey Island - the Gem of the Arctic Circle in North-Iceland
I had forever wanted to visit Grímsey island and had planned on doing so for years, but had always left it out on my travels in Iceland. Finally, when staying for a whole week in Akureyri, the Capital of the North, for my summer vacation I did it! I visited this beautiful island on the Arctic Circle Express with the company Ambassador from Akureyri harbour. Unfortunately, this tour is longer available. Certain northern winds on this route made people very sea-sick so it was cancelled! But the Arctic Circle Express Flight will take you on a 3-hour tour including Grímsey island. The Arctic C
Humpback Whales in Abundance on a Whale Watching Tour from Akureyri in North-Iceland
I recently went whale watching in Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. This was the second time in my life that I have gone whale watching, and after the Whale Watching Akureyri tour I can tell you that I am now hooked, so to speak. We saw so many whales that I was astounded. I was staying in Akureyri for a week for my summer vacation and was referred to the whale watching company Ambassador, which has now merged with Elding Adventure at Sea. A Unique Lava Walk through the Colourful Lava Field at Gjástykki at Krafla in North-Iceland
I visited the extraordinary colourful lava field, Gjástykki, when I joined guided a tour of this area. At Gjástykki you will see newly created lava formations from the Krafla volcano-tectonic eruptions back in 1975-1984, called the Krafla Fires. I had never been there before so I was excited about visiting it. I followed the Katla Fires on the news when I was younger and the name Gjástykki had always sounded so exotic to me. I had wanted to visit it for the longest time as I visit the Krafla area every year. So when I saw that there was a guided tour to Gjástykki I jumped at the chance of f
The Extraordinary Ice Sculptures in Lofthellir Cave in Mývatn North-Iceland
While staying for a week in the Mývatn area in North Iceland I got the opportunity to visit Lofthellir cave, the extraordinary lava cave, where one can see the largest natural ice sculptures in any known lava cave in Iceland. We were staying at Mývatn so we met up with the guide at the Mývatnsstofa information centre. Top photo: Amazing ice sculptures in Lofthellir cave Lava fields on the way to Lofthellir Lofthellir cave is located in the Búrfell lava field. On our way to the cave, we passed the distinctive Mt. Touring across Iceland via Kjölur incl. Hveravellir and Mt. Kerlingarfjöll
I joined the most wonderful tour called Kjölur Coast to Coast Highland Route. This tour takes you from Reykjavík, the capital city in the south, through the middle of Iceland and way up to Akureyri, the capital of the north - with a myriad of interesting and beautiful sights on the way. Unfortunately, this tour has been cancelled now. Top photo: soaking in a hot pool at Hveravellir We started the tour in a bakery in Reykjavík I was picked up at 6:30 am as we had a long day ahead of us. This was to be a slow-travel tour. There are highlights on the tour, but then you can ask the driver
Eyjafjallajökull Volcano and the South Coast of Iceland in a Luxurious Super Jeep
I sometimes join guided tours in Iceland to show you what they are like, and recently joined one tour to Eyjafjallajökull & South Coast by Activity Iceland. A month earlier I had joined the same company on a guided tour of the Silver Circle and fell in love with their super jeep and so wanted to try it out again! This jeep is a huge modified Ford 350 EXXL Excursion extra long with 46 inches tires. The Extraordinary Lava Formations and Colours in Víðgelmir Lava Cave in West-Iceland
I got the chance to visit one of the colourful lava cave tubes in Iceland recently when I entered Víðgelmir lava cave, which is considered to be the most magnificent lava cave in Iceland. I joined a tour which started in Reykjavík with pick-up starting at 7:00 am. On our way to Víðgelmir lava cave, we passed some beautiful sight and made several stops on the way. Langjökull Ice Cave Tunnel and the Beautiful Whale Fjord in West-Iceland
Do you fancy a visit to the largest commercial man-made ice cave tunnel in the world in Iceland's second-largest glacier, Langjökull! The cave opened on June 1st, 2015 and I first visited it on June 11th, 2015. I visited it again with the tour company, Bustravel Iceland. This is quite an exceptional experience - to walk hundreds of metres inside a glacier! The pick-up for my tour started at 7:00 am and on our way to the ice cave tunnel, we passed some beautiful sights and made several stops on the way.
