Geothermal Power From Deildartunguhver Hot Spring

Meet the forces of nature in Borgarfjörður - West Iceland. Growing up in Iceland in the late 20th century was a privilege that I am very grateful for. In many parts of our country we can use the amazing energy that comes from our waterfalls or from under the earth´s crust, the geothermal power.

Whenever I turn on the lights or have my bath water running in my house I keep in mind that this is a valuable resource.

The biggest (pr liter) hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver, is 35 km from Egils Guesthouse in Borgarnes at road nr. 50.  It is easy to spot because of the steam and there is a short walk from the parking space to the hot spring. Thread the path carefully while you watch the beautiful colors and experience and hear the sound of energy.

From the hot spring comes about 180 liters of 100° hot water pr. second. It´s power and heat have been used to heat up houses in Borgarnes and the nearest town Akranes for over 30 years. We use it for our swimmingpool and hot tubs in Borgarnes. When I watch the steam and water coming up from the earth, I think about the great power that lies underneath the earth´s crust. This water has clearly made contact with something rather hot down there!
