Summer Solstice and Midsummer Eve in Reykjavík

Summer solstice and Midsummer Eve are quite magical here in Iceland when the midnight sun barely sets and then rises again. In June, this far up north, the summer nights are bright and the day is endless. And on the longest day of the year, the 21st of June, the sun sets at midnight and then almost immediately rises again. Top photo: Summer Solstice at Viðey island Photographing the sunset from Laugarnestangi at 23:54 We Icelanders stay up late on this day and try to watch the midnight sunset. In 2023, we who live in Reykjavík were in luck: after a very long period of rain and gloomy weat

The warm Footbath of the Bakkabræður brothers in Svarfaðardalur Valley

High up on a hill in Svarfaðardalur valley in North Iceland, a warm footbath is hidden away. It is the footbath of Bakkabræður, who were not-so-intelligent brothers who lived at Bakki in Svarfaðardalur. While staying in the beautiful Svarfaðardalur valley, I hiked up to Fótlaug Bakkabræðra - the footbath of Bakkabræður, which is difficult to spot from the road if you don't know where to look for it. It was only on my second hike that I found the warm pool. Top photo: Footbathing in the footbath of Bakkabræður The large rock by the footbath and the last part of the path leading to the footba

The beautiful Churches in Svarfaðardalur Valley in North Iceland

In the historical Svarfaðardalur valley in North Iceland, you will find three small and beautiful churches. And a narthex of an old church, which now serves as a chapel. In this travel blog, I am going to tell you a little about these churches. There is something so special about these churches in Svarfaðardalur valley; they are small timber churches built in the Svarfdælska structural type, which you cannot find anywhere else in Iceland. Top photo: Tjarnarkirkja church Vallakirkja church  You can see a similar church in Öxnadalur valley (Bakkakirkja, which I also visited), Glæsibæjarkir

The beautiful Svarfaðardalur Nature Reserve and Húsabakki in North Iceland

In several of my travel blogs over the years, I have shown you the valleys of Iceland, told you about historical sites often overlooked by visitors, and shown you the treasures these valleys hold. Svarfaðardalur valley in North Iceland is one such valley, which is well worth a visit, as here you will find beautiful little churches, one of the turf houses left in Iceland, Laug Bakkabræðra - the Pool of the Brothers at Bakki, the Svarfaðardalur Nature Reserve, and much more. Skútafoss - the Hidden Waterfall of the Cave in East Iceland

In my last travel blog, I showed you the magnificent waterfalls in the mighty glacial river Jökulsá á Fjöllum, but smaller freshwater rivers can also create beautiful waterfalls. One such waterfall is hidden away in East Iceland. It is called Skútafoss - the Small cave falls, and it is often referred to as the Hidden waterfall. Top photo: Skútafoss waterfall  Photo taken inside the cave at Skútafoss waterfall One summer, my father-in-law and I drove the ring road clockwise for 10 days, just the two of us, and by the end of our trip, we stayed by Mt. The amazing turquoise Blábjörg Cliffs in Berufjörður in East Iceland

Hidden away from the road in the beautiful Berufjörður in East Iceland is a turquoise rock called Blábjörg or Blue Cliffs. Blábjörg cliffs are by the sea along Ring Road 1, but most people are unaware of them and pass them by.  It is well worth stopping to take a closer look at it, especially on a sunny day, when the cliff's colours are vivid. Top photo: Blábjörg cliffs and Mt. There is easy access to Bl

The Ghost Skeljungur and Bóla in Bólugil - Folklore from North Iceland

In this travel blog, I want to tell you why a gorge with a row of beautiful cascades in Skagafjörður, North Iceland, is called Bólugil ravine.  And also why a peculiar rock close by is called Skeljungssteinn rock. These stories, which are supposed to have taken place around the settlement of Iceland, are told in Icelandic folklore. The stories are brutal, and I never pass this area without thinking about the terrible fate of Bóla and Skeljungur. Once you know these stories, you’ll never see this area the same way again! Galtastaðir-fram and other traditional Turfhouses in East Iceland

On my travels around Iceland over the years, I have visited all the remaining turf houses in my country, but these few turf houses are part of Iceland's architectural heritage. In many of my travel blogs, I have shown you what the turf houses in Iceland look like, and in this travel blog, I want to show you what the turf houses in East Iceland look like. There are a couple of turf houses and outhouses left in East Iceland that give us an idea of what turf houses were like in this part of Iceland in the olden days. A Wonderful Stay at Fossatún amongst the Trolls of West Iceland

In this travel blog, I am going to show you the fairy-tale world of trolls at Fossatún in West Iceland. It is such a fun place to visit, and I always stop by it when travelling on the Silver Circle of Iceland. Here you can find Tröllagarðurinn-the Trolls' Park, which the owners created as a recreation area for their guests at Fossatún.
