The latter is a vast lake with thousands of icebergs and a resident seal population.

You can also reach each of the three major sites of the Golden Circle easily.

The Geysir Geothermal Area is a fantastic place to marvel over the volcanic forces that define the country, and you can watch the geyser Strokkur erupt every five to ten minutes. It is 60 miles (97 kilometers) away. Gullfoss, meanwhile, is a mighty waterfall with a fascinating history you can learn about on-site and only six miles (ten kilometers) further. Thingvellir National Park is a valley between two tectonic plates with magnificent nature, is 65 miles (104 kilometers) east.

For amenities such as groceries, gas, and tour information, you will find everything you need at Hvolsvollur. The capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, is 71 miles (114) kilometers away.
