Opis
Puffin Hotel Vik is a wonderfully positioned hotel in Iceland's southernmost village, Vík í Mýrdal, which puts travelers within walking distance of black sand beaches and the Skaftfellingur shipwreck museum. Travelers looking to enjoy the beach before or after crowds have departed should book a bed here in advance.
Location & Nearby
Located a straight shot along the Ring Road 187km southwest of Reykjavík, the Puffin Hotel Vik sits just 350m from Route 1 in a privileged position near some of the South Coast of Iceland's biggest attractions. Bedding down here makes for an excellent base for exploring the volcanos, glaciers, waterfalls, and black sand beaches of the Katla UNESCO Global Geopark, Iceland's inaugural Geopark.
It's also a quick drive to some of South Iceland's most memorable attractions. Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a stunning somersaulting cascade dropping 60 meters (200 feet) which can be seen from the wide cavern behind, is a 45-minute drive west. Skógafoss waterfall, another tumbling beauty with a similar drop to Seljalandsfoss but clocking in at 25 meters wide (82 feet), and nearby Skógar Museum, featuring over 16,000 artifacts from Iceland’s history spread across an open-air museum, a folk museum, and a technical museum, are just a 30-minute drive west.
The world-famous black sand beach at Reynisdrangar, separated from Vik by the mountain of the same name, is reachable in under 15 minutes by car. The massive Mýrdalsjökull glacier looms due north, while the stunning Dyrhólaey promontory also beckons nearby.
But the true coup of staying here is access to the atmospheric village of Vík í Mýrdal (Vik for short) itself, home to the strikingly white, red-accented Reyniskirkja church and panoramic views of the high tuff Reynisfjara Mountain and the Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks, which sit just off the coast of the village's own black sand beach – just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The Skaftfellingur Museum exhibits a 100-year-old maritime ship in the village as well.
Services in Vik include several restaurants worth seeking out, such as Suður-Vík, which serves up hearty Icelandic cuisine in addition to pizza and Asian-inspired dishes. A Krónan supermarket, several gas stations, a swimming pool, and a wool factory also call Vik home.
