Greater Reykjavik Area | Evening Tour
Discover the hidden secrets of Reykjavík on this economic evening tour of the greater capital area, where you will visit cultural remains, natural sceneries, elven cities and a Viking Age Longhouse. If you are fascinated by the history, culture and folklore of Iceland, this is the perfect tour for you. Your journey begins at Hallgrímskirkja Church, from where your local guide will whisk you off to the town of Kópavogur for a panoramic view of the capital. Then, you’ll continue towards another capital area township, Garðabær, to visit a recently unearthed Viking Longhouse. After having marvelled at these intrinsic historical remains, where they rest amongst the capital’s residents, you will be treated to a short walking tour of the town and discover lingering connections to Iceland’s old capital Copenhagen. Next up is the lava field Gálgahraun, or Gallow’s Lava, where you will enjoy the natural scenery while learning of executions of bygone times. This beautiful lava field was also the repeated subject of many of the most celebrated paintings of Kjarval, one of Iceland’s most renowned artists. After plenty of time to take photos, you will continue your journey and make your way to Bessastaðir at the Álftanes Peninsula, a scenic shoreline abundant with birdlife, and the official abode of the President of Iceland. Even though the peninsula is located in the middle of the Greater Reykjavík Area, it is incredibly peaceful and farmlike. The Bessastaðakirkja stone church from the 1700s is the jewel in the peninsula’s crown, and you will be treated to an excursion around the whole area. The night’s not over yet, as you will next head to the harbour town Hafnarfjörður, built in the middle of a vast lava field and dotted with preserved timber houses from over a century ago. The folklore of the town is deeply rooted with tales of the lava’s original residents, but elves and hidden people are known to inhabit this charming old fishing town. If conditions allow, during the summer season you will finally be brought to a lookout spot in Hafnarfjörður to watch the midnight sun light up the glacier Snæfellsjökull, where it looms across the bay on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. In winter, however, you might be brought to a spot from which to see the Northern Lights if they decide to show. Book this adventure now and get your dose of sightseeing and culture, and become an expert on the history and folklore of Reykjavík during the scope of one scenic evening.
