Heima Holiday Homes sit in the South Iceland countryside at Hraunvellir, 3.8 miles (6.2 kilometers off the Ring Road not far from the riverbank of the passing Olfusa River, which is on its way to Selfoss some 13.6 miles (22 kilometers) southwest of Heima. In Selfoss, the largest residential area in South Iceland, there are plenty of restaurants and bars for an enjoyable night out.

Tryggvaskali restaurant, housed inside Selfoss' first house (dating to 1890), is renowned for its Icelandic menu and romantic atmosphere. Smidjan Brugghus is a great craft brewery and restaurant where you can chase a blue cheeseburger with a New England-style IPA.

Thorsmork (the Valley of Thor), a nature reserve nestled between the Eyjafjallajokull, Myrdalsjokull, and Tindfjallajokull glaciers, is also close at hand – just 38 miles (61 kilometers) or so southeast of Heima. It's one of the country's most popular hiking destinations (photographers and nature lovers flock here as well). Just six miles (9.6 kilometers) further north of Selfoss is Ingolfsfjall, an 1807-foot (551 meters) tall tuff mountain that offers wonderful day hikes.

At the Myrdalsjokull glacier, snowmobile tours across its surface and take ice caving tours beneath it are offered throughout the year. Heima is also perfectly positioned to take on Iceland's mega-popular Golden Circle tour. The Geyser geothermal area is just 32 miles (52 kilometers) north of the accommodation. Thingvellir National Park, 44 miles (71 kilometers) northwest, and Gullfoss waterfall, 36.5 miles (59 kilometers) northeast, round out this famous route's attractions nearby.

The nearest airport is Vestmannaeyjar Airport, 53 miles (86 kilometers) from the accommodation, though it requires a 30-45-minute ferry to each. Keflavik Airport, just a bit further away at 74.5 miles (120 kilometers) west, might be the easier choice and, given the beauty of the drive across South Iceland, not a bad deal at all.

The suites are spacious and bright, very well insulated, and equipped with a floor heating system. Some apartments have two 35.3-inch (90-centimeter) beds, while other have and king-size bed with one mattress (there is also a sofa bed in each apartment; bed linens included). Each has its own bathroom and shower (with toiletries included).

Additional standard features include kitchens with a stove with two hot plates, an oven, a refrigerator, a toaster, and a dishwasher. French press coffeemakers and old-school stove kettles help set the vibe (but you can request a speedier electric kettle and a Senseo machine). Coffee & tea are provided free of charge.
