Hotel Hafnarfjall is a small country hotel between the sea and the powerful Hafnarfjall mountain just 44 miles (71 kilometers) north of Reykjavik near Borgarfjordur Bay.
Unspoiled nature is this West Iceland hotel's calling card – the northern lights, blueberry picking, fishing, and hiking are just the tip of the glacier for what's in store for guests staying at Hafnarfjall.
Location & Nearby
In a low-slung forest between mountains and the sea, Hotel Hafnarfjall is blessed with outstanding 360-degree views of the dramatic Iceland landscape. It's located just off the Ring Road near the second-longest bridge in Iceland, Borgarfjardarbru, which crosses Borgarfjordur Bay to the charming peninsula settled of Borganes, which is less than three miles (five kilometers) away. The route from Reykjavik takes you under the Hvalfjordur fjord via a 3.7-mile (six-kilometer) tunnel and across
Borganes is a great pit stop on the way to the Westfjords and is considered the gateway to the Snaefellsnes peninsula. The town itself is prettily perched on a peninsula and well worth exploring. There is one museum in town. The Settlement Centre houses two exhibitions, one on the Settlement Era and another on the Saga of Egil. It's located 3.1 miles (five kilometers) from Hotel Hafnarfjall.
Traveling with kids on your Ring Road trip? The Bjossaolo environmental playground, made entirely of discarded materials and recycled materials, is a great place to spend an hour or two. Borganes is also home to services such as gas stations, supermarkets, pharmacies, and the like, including a few noteworthy restaurants. La Colina Pizzeria, the charming Englendingavík, and Bara Olstofa Lydveldisins gastropub are all worth consideration.
Hotel Hafnarfjall is a perfect jumping-off point for the Snaefellsnes peninsula - all of the region's wonderful attractions are in front of you. Ytri Tunga Beach, a popular spot for seal watching in June and July, is less than 55 miles (88 kilometers) northwest. The Lysuholslaug Pool, with its murky-green geothermal waters, makes for a wonderful stop seven miles (11 kilometers) further west. Snaefellsjokull National Park is a bit further on – 81 miles or 131 kilometers - but easily reached in under two hours of driving. In the opposite direction, the Langjokull glacier is less than 37 miles (60 kilometers) to the east. Glymur, the second tallest waterfall in Iceland, is also 32 miles (51 kilometers) east.
