Svartifoss & other beautiful Attractions in Skaftafell in South-Iceland

In this travel blog, I want to show you the elegant Svartifoss waterfall - the Black Fall, a beautiful waterfall which cascades down into a heart-shaped gorge made of black and brown basalt columns. Svartifoss, the Black waterfall, is one of the unique waterfalls in SE-Iceland, tucked away in Skaftafell nature reserve, which has been part of Vatnajökull National Park since 2008. I love the mesmerizing feeling of sitting by waterfalls and have to tear myself away. I am in luck, as Iceland has so many beautiful waterfalls that I visit often.  One of my favourite trips in my country is visiting the waterfalls in the south; the best-known are Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. In this travel blog, I want to show you my favourite waterfalls in South Iceland. Celebrating New Year's Eve in Reykjavík, the Capital City of Iceland

The whole Icelandic nation goes wild on New Year's Eve in Iceland.  We love shooting fireworks, and you will notice that from around 8 pm, we start slowly shooting some fireworks - then everything will be dead calm from 10:30 - 11:30 pm as the whole nation watches an Icelandic TV comic show Áramótaskaupið - "Skaupið" for short, which is an Icelandic satire on the events of the year. The view of Reykjavík from the top of my mother-in-law's block of flats I have been getting a lot of questions from visitors about where they can watch this show. It is in Icelandic, but if you want to join us

A Local's Guide to the Golden Circle Tour in Iceland

The first tour I joined when I started writing travel blogs here on Guide to Iceland, many years ago, was the most popular tour in Iceland: the Golden Circle tour. There are many variations of the Golden Circle tour, and I can recommend being guided by a local for the best experience. There are so many beautiful places in Iceland and interesting things to do, but I always take my foreign friends to the Golden Circle. Join me for a tour of the Golden Circle :) Top photo: Þingvellir National Park in autumn Þingvellir National Park Lögberg The first stop on the Golden Circle is one of m

The lovely Húsavík - the Whale Watching Capital of Iceland

When travelling in North Iceland, I would recommend visiting the lovely town of Húsavík on the Tjörnes peninsula, and maybe joining a whale-watching tour, as Húsavík is nicknamed the whale-watching capital of Iceland.  And now Húsavík has become famous for the film The Eurovision Song Contest: the Story of the Fire Saga. Húsavík is also the town where my grandmother and her 14 siblings were born, so it is very dear to me. Tungustapi in Sælingsdalur - the Church of the Elves in West Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

While travelling in Sælingsdalur Valley in West Iceland, you will notice a protruding hill called Tungustapi. This hill is also called Álfakirkjan or the Church of the Elves, and some believe it to be the Cathedral of the Elves! Álfar is the Icelandic term for elves. There are many places here in Iceland named after the elves and the hidden people of Iceland, and there is still a strong belief amongst us Icelanders that we share Iceland with these hidden people. The amazing Mývatn & Krafla Area in North Iceland - a Compilation of the Wonderful Sights

Way up in North Iceland, you will find the amazing Mývatn area. Visiting it is like stepping into another world, and I love spending time up there.  Here you will find mud pools, a lunar-like landscape, pseudo craters, lava pillars, the Mývatn Naturebaths, a lake inside a volcanic crater, and the amazing Dimmuborgir - Dark Fortress, to name just a few interesting places in Mývatn. Not to forget an adventurous visit to the lava cave Lofthellir, where you will have to squeeze through a small hole to see the wonders inside, which include the biggest ice sculptures in any known cave in Icelan
