When Jung Young-joon (44) and his wife, who are the same age, got married in 2014, they tried to have a child. They rushed to get married at 34, but it didn't work out. But children didn't come easily. At 36, she was diagnosed with infertility. Her doctor said it was difficult to get pregnant naturally. She turned to in vitro fertilization, but the news was not good. She tried more than a dozen times until last year. Now in her mid-40s, Chung says, “I felt like I should just accept the passage of time.”

She started running around 2021. He followed the advice of others that he needed to get in shape to have children. He also wanted to get fit to help his wife during her pregnancy. “There were days when it was so hard (mentally and physically). I just felt like I had to do something,” he says. His wife joined him for the run.

At first, he felt like his chest would explode after just two kilometers. The couple trained weekdays and weekends with interval running (fast and slow). I'm now past the first trimester and into the stabilization phase. I named him Love. It means to receive a lot of love and share a lot. “It's been ups and downs, but my wife and baby are doing great. I'm going to do everything I can to stay by her side and protect them both.”

After finishing the Seoul Half Marathon on the morning of the 27th, Jung said, “Last year's Seoul Half Marathon was a turning point in my life. Running this course again this year gave me a new sense of emotion.” He finished in 1 hour, 38 minutes, and 3 seconds. “I had to fight the heat because the temperature rose a little early, but I didn't give up and ran until the end, wishing my mom and baby good health.”
