Description

Discover the magical village of Vik on Iceland’s South Coast with this one-hour super jeep tour. Those who want to enjoy a four-by-four adventure that crosses rivers and reaches black-sand beaches and dramatic geological formations should not miss this opportunity.

This tour begins in Vik, Iceland’s southernmost village. Those traveling along the South Coast will often stop or stay here because of its fantastic location. Vik is approximately halfway between Reykjavik and the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and close to popular sites such as Skogafoss waterfall and the Solheimajokull glacier.

Your guide will meet you at the base camp in their modified super jeep, perfect for tackling Iceland’s rough terrain. The tour leader is an excellent driver and a local expert who knows the sites in and out. They can answer any of your questions about the nature and culture of Iceland.

Though this is an express tour lasting just an hour, you will still get to explore some of the most incredible sites in South Iceland.

Reynisfjara is a black-sand beach that stretches for miles in either direction. The waves here are enormous and extremely powerful, building strength as they travel unimpeded across the Atlantic to crash here. Swimming in the area is illegal for this reason, but your guide will show you some of the best viewing points.

Not only is Reynisfjara a beautiful natural attraction, but it has cultural significance too. Offshore are two towering rock formations called Reynisdrangar that are said to be trolls.

According to legend, these folklore creatures waded into the sea to capture a ship and drag it to shore. However, they were caught in the rising sun and frozen to stone.

Another set of geological marvels at Reynisfjara is the hexagonal basalt columns at the Reynisfjall cliffs.

The Dyrholaey cliffs will be your next destination. Here, you can marvel over an enormous rock arch large enough for ships to sail through - pilots have even flown small planes through the gap.

If you travel in summer, you may even see the colony of puffins that nest here each year. Atlantic puffins are rare worldwide, but they are abundant in Iceland. Their beautiful colors, tiny size, and clumsy behavior make them one of the most incredible animals in the country.

After enjoying Reynisfjara and Dyrholaey, you will continue your super jeep adventure by going off-road. This vehicle will take you down bumpy roads and even cross a river, providing an exhilarating experience!

Depending on time constraints and weather, your guide may have the opportunity to show you some hidden gems in the area. South Iceland has many famous attractions, but there is plenty off the beaten track to admire with fewer crowds.

After an hour of exploration, you’ll return to Vik. Because this tour is short and sweet, you can combine it with many other attractions or make it a break from your Ring Road adventure.
