The Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón
Jökulsárlón literally means "glacial river lagoon". I'm sure you have heard about this beautiful natural wonder of Iceland. The lagoon is located on the south-east side of the country and can be seen from the main road nr. 1 so if you are surfing around in this area you have to make a stop there. Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park and developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown because of melting of the glaciers and has increased fourfold since in the 1970s. It recently became the
Puffins in Iceland
Did you know that Atlantic puffins spend most of their lives at sea, but return to land to form breeding colonies during spring and summer? Iceland is one of those colonies because in spring time they come over here for nesting and Iceland is the breeding home for about 60 percent of the world's Atlantic puffins. Puffins can be seen in Iceland from early April until September each year. There are more than one puffin species but the one that breeds in Iceland is the so called Atlantic Puffin. What makes them special is the penguin like colour with a very colourful beak. The beak fades
The Majestic Canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur
If you have never been to this canyon before I sure recommend a little trip up there. The canyon is up to 100 m deep and 2 km long and it is located in southeast Iceland not so far away from the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The river Fjaðrá runs through it. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon was created by progressive erosion by flowing water from glaciers through the rocks over a long period of time, some say 9000 years ago. Its not difficult to get there because its not far away from the main ring road and the gravel road that leads you up there is in good condition. Once there you can park the car
The Different Displays of Skógafoss and its Legend
What appearance of Skógafoss do you prefer? The rainbow summerglow, the frozen beauty or maybe the artistic look of it or maybe you love it in black and white? Skógafoss is the kind of waterfall that is really picturesque and it's easy and so much fun to play with the camera around it. The light is very different between seasons, even between weeks or days. You can always get a different look. As some of you might know Skógafoss is located on the south coast of Iceland and is one of Iceland's biggest waterfall with a width of 25 metres and a drop of 60 m. Due to the amount of spray th
Geothermal Areas - Beautiful, Steamy Smelly Spots
Do you also like the smell in the geothermal areas of Iceland ? As you know Iceland is known for its geothermal activity. I guess most of us who live here are used to all this but I have the feeling that travelers do not agree with us at least not about liking the smell. If you wanna experience such geothermal spots we have some very close to Reykjavík city for example in the Krísuvík area and the Grindavík area on the Reykjanes peninsula. Seltún Seltún in the Krísuvík area, very close to Kleifarvatn lake is a geothermal field with solfataras, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs. You wil
Dyrhólaey - The Arch with the Hole
When you are surfing the south coast of Iceland there are so many places to explore and I know you can't see it all but if you have time I recommend taking the turn to Dyrhólaey. Dyrhólaey is about 174 km from Reykjavík city or about 2 1/2 hour drive, not so far away from the beautiful little village Vík (the southern most village in Iceland). Dyrhólaey is a small peninsula or promontory but is a former island. The whole area is really interesting and I recommend you spend some time there. I personally could stay there for hours. Simply love this place. When driving on the main road #1 or
Walking on glacier and surfing the south coast
Recently I went on this amazing tour and I want to tell you a little bit about it. The main focus or the highlight of the tour is the hike on Sólheimajökull glacier but on your way to the glacier you will surf the south coast and get a chance to explore several beautiful gems such as the mighty Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, black beach at Reynisfjara and Vík í Mýrdal. Also you will see many glaciers and volcanos on your way when driving as for example the famous Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano to mention one. The tour started early in the morning from Reykjavík center and we had an excellent
10 great tips for Photography in Reykjavik and Nearby
Want some tips about great shooting spots in Reykjavík city? If you prefer to discover and explore nature within the city there are plenty of interesting places to see and shoot photos. 1. Sólfarið or the Sun Voyager You probably wont miss this sculpture located on the seaside at Sæbraut street not so far away from Harpa concert hall. The sun Voyager is a dreamboat or an ode to the sun. This sculpture is extremely picturesque and makes a good foreground with the mt. Esjan or the cityscape in the background. Cool for sunrise and sunset shots too. 2. Harpa Concert Hall Harpan is a conce
Hellnar - Tiny Little Beach and a Café
Because I love Snæfellsnes peninsula in west Iceland I'm gonna dwell there a little bit longer (see my last blog about Búðir). Do you have a special place you can totally forget about time? For me Hellnar on the westernmost part of Snæfellsnes is a place like that. Again like at Búðir there is a very special energy around there and when there I always get this soothing, relaxing feeling like I don’t want to leave. The tiny rocky beach with perfectly shaped stones, the peculiar cave, the sound of the ocean and how nature has formed everything so perfectly and beautifully makes this spo
Picnic at the white beach Búðir
Most of the beaches in Iceland are pitch black, some are rocky and wild, some do have soft black sand while others are covered with white/yellow sand. The white beaches are rare though but for example in the Westfjords you can find some white or yellow beaches and also at Snæfellsnes peninsula in west Iceland. If you are driving around Snæfellsnes then I recommend a stop at Búðir. There is something very special about this place and this area even though there is absolutely nothing there except one hotel and a church surrounded by endless lava field, "Búðahraun" and some beautiful wind
