Kvernufoss Waterfall - the less visited Neighbour of Skógafoss in South-Iceland
Kvernufoss waterfall is a beautiful 30-meters high (98 ft) waterfall that is half-hidden away in a gorge in South Iceland, yet very close to the ring-road. It is located on the east side of the popular Skógafoss waterfall and is often overlooked by travellers. I myself visited it for the first time back in 2010 but had often ogled it from the ring road when driving east after visiting Skógafoss waterfall. Kvernufoss Waterfall It is possible to hike into the gorge to visit Kvernufoss, and the hike takes only some 20 minutes by the river. It is an easy hike and only in a couple of pla
The Icelandic Haukadalsskógur Forest, Marteinshver hot spring, and a dip in Kúalaug hot pool
Next to the very popular Geysir geothermal area in South Iceland, you will find one of our national treasures; the huge Haukadalsskógur forest - Iceland standard -, a lovely church, and a small geothermal pool in which one can bathe. Very few people visit it as they go straight from Geysir to Gullfoss waterfall, which are 2 of the main attractions of the Golden Circle, which is the most popular day tour in Iceland. The Mystical Nauthúsagil Ravine in South Iceland & its beautiful Waterfalls
There are some hidden places in Iceland, which are like out of this world. I visited one of them recently, the mystical Nauthúsagil ravine in South Iceland, which translated to English means Bull Shed Ravine. I know that the name sounds a bit strange, but I will explain how this name came about a little further on in my travel-blog. Top photo: a hidden waterfall in Nauthúsagil ravine The beginning of the hike into Nauthúsagil Characteristic of Nauthúsagil is the rowan that grows on the rims of the ravine and in some places it creates a see-through roof, which almost covers the ravine
Extremely dangerous Waves by Reynisfjara and Kirkjufjara black Beaches in South-Iceland!
Yet another fatal accident took place on the 10th of June 2022 on Reynisfjara beach in South Iceland, when a foreign traveller was swept out to sea by the sneaker waves on this notorious beach. His wife got caught in the same wave but got saved. The last fatal accident before this one took place on the 10th of November 2021, when a young Chinese woman was swept away by the sneaker waves. Please, please be careful at Reynisfjara! I do not want to have to update my travel-blog with new fatalities like this one :( Top photo: Kirkjufjara beach Dyrhólaey On the 9th of January 2017, a German
Bárður Snæfellsás - the Mythical Protector of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland
In my 5-part series of travel-blogs about the Magical Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, I often mentioned the half troll-half man Bárður Snæfellsás - the Protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Bárður was according to Bárðar Saga Snæfellsáss the settler of this area, half a troll, and half a man, his father was half a titan, but his mother was human. Top photo: a close-up of the statue of Bárður at Arnarstapi Bárður Snæfellsás at Arnarstapi Bárður came to Iceland in the 9th century and gave the peninsula its name, Snjófellsnes peninsula, but both words "snær" and "snjór" mean snow
The Magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West-Iceland - Part V - Stykkishólmur & the Trip back to Reykjavík
This is the final part of my I-V part series of travel-blogs where I invite you on a tour with me of the magical Snæfellsnes peninsula in West-Iceland. There is so much to see and do that one travel-blog wasn't enough and the whole trip around the Snæfellsnes peninsula ended up filling five travel-blogs! Plus side-blogs about interesting locations which I wanted to tell you more about. I hope you enjoy travelling with me around this beautiful peninsula :) Top photo: By Snæfellsjökull Stykkishólmur - the largest town on the Snæfellsnes peninsula Stykkishólmur town on Snæfellsnes In my l
A Hilarious Comedy Show on the Icelandic Sagas in 75 Minutes at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík
I love writing about my ancestors the Vikings, who settled in Iceland in 874 AD give or take a few years, and I often get this question: "Where can I see Viking stuff in Iceland?". So I was thrilled to hear of a Viking comedy show in English at our concert hall Harpa called the Icelandic Sagas - the Greatest Hits in 75 minutes. On their website they describe the play as being "a comedy theatre roller coaster ride through all 40 of the epic Icelandic Sagas" and that is exactly what you will get :) This excellent comedy show is almost like a farce, quick, silly, funny - often hilarious to
The Westman islands in Iceland - the Puffin and Volcano Tour - Local Guidance
While visiting the Westman Islands I joined one of the tours of the islands to be able to better tell you what these interesting islands have to offer. I contacted Eyjatours, which is a family company in the Westman Islands, as there is nothing like local knowledge and guidance. I opted for their most popular tour, the Puffin and Volcano Tour. Top photo: Einar with Tóti the Puffin The ferry Herjólfur sails to the Westman Islands The highlights of this tour are: Sprangan, - Stórhöfði, the windiest place in Europe, - Mt. The Westman Islands - Sæheimar Museum and the Puffins - Closed with a new Home at Sea Life Trust
I have written several travel-blogs on the volcanic Vestmannaeyjar - the Westman islands and now I want to tell you about a lovely museum, which in my opinion is a must-visit. This museum is called Sæheimar Aquarium or the Aquarium and Museum of Natural History of Vestmannaeyjar - the first of its kind in Iceland, established back in 1964. Unfortunately, this lovely museum is now closed and parts of it were moved to the Sea Life Trust Beluga Sanctuary. Stuffed puffins behind glass. See the puffling in the middle :) At Sæheimar you will find 3 exhibitions; the bird exhibition, the min
The Westman Islands - Eldfell volcano & Eldheimar - the Pompei of the North in Iceland
A volcanic eruption in 1973 in the Westman Islands caused massive destruction and forced all the islanders to flee up to the mainland of Iceland. I visited a new and unique museum in the Westman Islands called Eldheimar - the Pompei of the North, where you can get to know all about the volcanic eruption in 1973 in the Westman Islands. Top photo: Inside Eldheimar museum Eldheimar museum The museum was built around one of the houses that got totally buried under the cinders from the volcanic eruption. Eldheimar has now become one of the biggest attractions on the Westman Islands. The
