Katla Volcano and Kötlutangi Spit - the Southernmost Point of the Mainland of Iceland
I have been writing about the historical Hjörleifshöfði promontory in South Iceland in my last 2 travel-blogs. Now I want to tell you about the dreaded volcano Katla in South Iceland, which Icelanders have been brought up to fear as the Katla eruptions are amongst the biggest cataclysms in Iceland. Top photo: Mýrdalsjökull glacier and Katla volcano The view from the top of the Hjörleifshöfði cape North of Hjörleifshöfði the infamous volcano Mt. Katla is lurking beneath the 590 sq.km ice cap of Mýrdalsjökull glacier, waiting to spew out its molten lava and ash clouds. South of Hjör
Hjörleifshöfði in South-Iceland - Part II - the Hike, the Inhabitants and the Yoda Cave
In South-Iceland you will find a historical promontory called Hjörleifshöfði. It is 221 meters high and towers majestically above the black glacial volcanic outwash, Mýrdalssandur. Hjörleifshöfði is named after the Viking settler, Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson, the blood brother of Ingólfur Arnarson who is considered to be our first Viking settler in around 874 AD. I have written another travel-blog about Ingólfur and Hjörleifur and the death of Hjörleifur just a year after he arrived in Iceland. Hjörleifshöfði Promontory in South-Iceland - the Blood Brothers Ingólfur and Hjörleifur
There are some promontories in South-Iceland, which are of great interest to me. I have already written a travel-blog about the elves in Mt. Pétursey in South-Iceland, but there is another promontory of interest further east, just after you pass the village of Vík. This historical promontory is called Hjörleifshöfði. Hjörleifshöfði is 221 meters high and towers majestically above the black glacial volcanic outwash, Mýrdalssandur. Hjörleifshöfði is named after the Viking settler, Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson, the blood brother of Ingólfur Arnarson who is considered to have been our first Vikin
A wonderful Day of exploring the extraordinary Mývatn Area in North-Iceland
I have written many travel-blogs about the extraordinarily diverse Mývatn area in North-Iceland. Now I want to show you a guided tour of Mývatn, as it is always very informative to listen to the geological explanations from the guides and learn new things about Iceland. I was staying with a friend for a week in Akureyri, which I always do around the time of Fiskidagurinn mikli - the Great Fish Day festival in Dalvík, and decided on trying out as many tours as I could in this area to introduce them to you. I was picked up at 7:45 am in Akureyri, the capital city of North-Iceland, and the gu
The spectacular Diamond Circle in North-Iceland
In South-Iceland we have got the Golden circle, and in West-Iceland we have got the Silver Circle, but did you know that we have got the Diamond Circle up north? I travelled up north and checked out the Diamond Circle to compare it with the very popular Golden Circle tours in the south. I joined a guided tour, but I have also visited the Diamond Circle many many times on my own as we have a summer cottage at Mývatn. Top photo: Dettifoss waterfall Now, let me show you the beautiful highlights as visited on a guided tour: Goðafoss waterfall - the Waterfall of the Gods Goðafoss waterfall
Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon - a Tour of the Jewels of the South Coast of Iceland
One of my favourite places in Iceland - and the Jewel in the Crown on the south coast of Iceland is Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. I have so often been asked about guided tours to Jökulsárlón, that I decided on joining the Outstanding 14-Hour South Coast Bus Tour to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon with Amphibian Boat Ride to check out their tour. We were picked up bright and early at 7 am as we had a long day ahead of us - 14 hours of checking out the south coast of Iceland. Our main destination on this tour was Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. But there were also other attractions along the way, we
An amazing Tour to Askja and Holuhraun Lava Field in the Highland of Iceland
In August 2016 I joined an 11-hour-tour of the highland of Iceland to visit Askja caldera and the Víti explosion crater. I had joined this tour exactly 2 years earlier after a big earthquake and landslide in July 2014, which resulted in the water level of Lake Askja rising 2 meters. Just after my visit, a volcanic eruption started, which lasted for 6 months! So I was eager to see the newest lava field in Iceland, Holuhraun. We met up with the guide, Erlendur, at Mývatn very early in the morning as we had a long, exciting day ahead of us. Top photo: Víti explosion crater Hrossaborg cr
3 days of fun at Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 3
Reykhólar village has a population of 135 (2016) and the Reykhólahreppur county has a population of 271, give or take a few. It is a very peaceful community and I love the pretty signs they have put up to remind us to drive slowly and think of the children in the village. The sign by the road, in the photo above, reads "think of the children". And the sign below reads "don't drive fast or no speeding". This is my 3rd travel-blog in my 3-part series on Reykhólar, where I had such a lovely stay. The other two travel-blogs are A lovely 3-Day-Stay at Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - P
3 Days of Fun at Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 2 - the Reykhólar Seabaths
This travel-blog is a continuation of my travel-blog A Lovely 3-day-stay in Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 1. That travel-blog was becoming so long, that I had to create 2 more parts as there is just so much to see and do here at Reykhólar and in the vicinity. After visiting the beautiful area of the loons the day was only to get better, as now I popped in at the Reykhólar Seabaths to see if they had a spot for me as the weather was heavenly. We had decided on hiking to the northernmost glacier in Iceland, Drangajökull glacier, on this day, but I so wanted to try out the sea bath
3 days of fun at Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 1
On my 9-day-exploration of the beautiful Westfjords of Iceland, I was now on my 7th day and after having stayed in Patreksfjörður town for the night I thought to myself that it was time to head north to Akureyri town. But before we headed north we wanted to explore the southern part of the Westfjords Region better. We had already been on a tour to Rauðasandur and Látrabjarg, which are the best-known pearls in the southern part of the Westfjords Region, but there were still some lesser-known areas which I wanted to explore. We found so many interesting places, which I will be writing about l
