The Historic Laugarbrekka on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir

Laugarbrekka is a well-known stop on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, and here the half-troll half-man and Protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula, Bárður Snæfellsás, settled and built his farm. Bárður lived at Laugarbrekka until he disappeared into Snæfellsjökull glacier after the incident at Rauðfeldsgjá, which I told you about in my travel-blog about Bárður. Opening photo: a statue of Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir  The information sign at Laugarbrekka Sigmundur Ketilsson, who had arrived in Iceland with Bárður, then lived at Laugarbrekka. Iceland's Only Serial Killer - the Bloody Story of the Homicidal Axlar-Björn

Have you ever heard about the notorious murderer Axlar-Björn - Iceland's only serial killer? In this travel-blog I am going to tell you about this mad person who murdered around 9-18 people, that we know of, especially wanderers and people travelling in the vicinity of his farm, Öxl on the south side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, and robbed them of their possessions. He then threw the bodies into a pond, Íglutjörn, close by.  More human remains were found in the lava, but Axlar-Björn claimed that he had found them dead on his land. Unleash your Inner Viking Warrior with a Professional Viking Portrait in Reykjavík

Over the years I have written many travel-blogs on Viking-related activities in Iceland as those of you, who read my travel-blog, know - I love my Viking ancestry and am always on the look-out for Viking-related locations and activities to show you in Iceland. And guess what, in my own city, Reykjavík, I found a professional studio off Laugavegur, our main shopping street downtown, which specializes in Viking portraits. I think this is a great souvenir to take back home from Iceland, maybe the best - a unique, professional Viking portrait of yourself - alone - or with your friends and famil

Árhver/Vellir in West-Iceland - Have you ever seen a Hot Spring in the Middle of a River?

In the middle of Reykjadalsá river in the beautiful Borgarfjörður in West-Iceland, you will see steam coming from a river.  It looks almost like a whale had found its way into the river and were blowing in the middle of the river.   This geological feature is a hot spring which goes by 4 names Árhver, Vellir, Vellindishver and Vellineshver hot spring. I am going to use the name Árhver in my travel-blog as I find it kind of cute - it literally means the hot spring in the river :) Árhver hot spring Árhver, which has been called Iceland's most peculiar hot spring, consists of some 6 vents

The Mystical Sorcerer's Cottage in Bjarnarfjörður in the Westfjords Region - Kotbýli kuklarans

In the remote Strandir area in the Westfjords Region of Iceland, the mystical Kotbýli kuklarans - the Sorcerer's Cottage awaits you. It represents both the habitation and living conditions of a sorcerer, but also the normal living conditions of tenant farmers in the 17th century.   The Sorcerer's Cottage, located at Klúka in Bjarnarfjörður, north of Hólmavík village, can be visited in the summertime. In my travel-blog about the Museum of Icelandic Witchcraft and Sorcery in Hólmavík village, I told you about my visit to the sorcery museum.  My visit was in April, which is still wintertime i

Möðrudalur - the Highest Located Farm in Iceland

Right in the middle of "nowhere" in the wilderness of Iceland, you will find the highest inhabited farm in Iceland Möðrudalur á Fjöllum - Möðrudalur in Öræfi at 469 meters (1,539 ft) above sea level. It is like entering an oasis after having driven through the rugged wilderness of Iceland. There has been a farm in Möðrudalur since the settlement of Iceland and one of the leading farms of Iceland was located here in the olden times. Important crossroads were in this area, the Trail of the Bishops and the Trail of Sámur, but you can read about Sámur in the Viking Saga Hrafnkel's saga freysgoð

Djúpivogur Village in East-Iceland and the Eggs at Gleðivík Bay

By the harbour in the lovely little village of Djúpivogur in East-Iceland, you will find a bay called Gleðivík or Merry bay. In that bay, a hidden treasure is to be found - a distinctive outdoor artwork hidden away from sight. This is an artwork by the popular Icelandic visual artist, Sigurður Guðmundsson, called Eggin í Gleðivík - the Eggs at Merry bay. The noted artist Sigurður Guðmundsson has received several international awards for his visual artwork. Eggin in Gleðivík - the Eggs at Merry bay The outside artwork consists of 34 huge granite eggs which represent the eggs of each of t

Kvernufoss Waterfall - the less visited Neighbour of Skógafoss in South-Iceland

Kvernufoss waterfall is a beautiful 30-meters high (98 ft) waterfall that is half-hidden away in a gorge in South Iceland, yet very close to the ring-road. It is located on the east side of the popular Skógafoss waterfall and is often overlooked by travellers.  I myself visited it for the first time back in 2010 but had often ogled it from the ring road when driving east after visiting Skógafoss waterfall. Kvernufoss Waterfall  It is possible to hike into the gorge to visit Kvernufoss, and the hike takes only some 20 minutes by the river. It is an easy hike and only in a couple of pla

The Icelandic Haukadalsskógur Forest, Marteinshver hot spring, and a dip in Kúalaug hot pool

Next to the very popular Geysir geothermal area in South Iceland, you will find one of our national treasures; the huge Haukadalsskógur forest - Iceland standard -, a lovely church, and a small geothermal pool in which one can bathe. Very few people visit it as they go straight from Geysir to Gullfoss waterfall, which are 2 of the main attractions of the Golden Circle, which is the most popular day tour in Iceland. Top photo: wood cutting in Haukadalsskógur Mushrooms in the forest Haukadalsskógur forest is the most highly cultivated of the national forests in Iceland and one of the big

The Mystical Nauthúsagil Ravine in South Iceland & its beautiful Waterfalls

There are some hidden places in Iceland, which are like out of this world. I visited one of them recently, the mystical Nauthúsagil ravine in South Iceland, which translated to English means Bull Shed Ravine. I know that the name sounds a bit strange, but I will explain how this name came about a little further on in my travel-blog. Top photo: a hidden waterfall in Nauthúsagil ravine The beginning of the hike into Nauthúsagil Characteristic of Nauthúsagil is the rowan that grows on the rims of the ravine and in some places it creates a see-through roof, which almost covers the ravine
