Did you know there is a circus in Iceland? A totally Icelandic circus, that tours the country? Sirkus Íslands, aka the Circus of Iceland, hasn't been around for many years. This is the first - and only - circus in Iceland and it was founded in 2007 by an Australian clown, Lee Nelson, who has lived in Iceland for a number of years now. He is now the director of the circus, that has a strong core of around 20 acrobats, aerial artists, jugglers, clowns and fabulous entertainers. There are no animals used in the circus. Currently, a few of the founding members of the circus are studying circus
Remember today, 26th of March 2015. Today may have been somewhat of a historical day in Iceland. It all started yesterday when an Icelandic college girl, Adda Smáradóttir, bared her breasts on Twitter to promote gender equality, only to be cyberbullied by an Icelandic guy. They have both erased their original Twitter posts but the storm of support was already brewing. The girl's college announced that today would be the "Free nipples day" - and the students were encouraged to leave their bras at home. Some decided to go topless (both girls and guys). Three other colleges followed suit, a
On Friday the 20th of March spring equinox occurs in Iceland. On the same day, there will be a supermoon. This Supermoon will ALSO block the sun and there will be a solar eclipse! I have actually never seen a solar eclipse in my life, so I'm super excited about this one! :) I'm fascinated about the beauty of this universe and our solar system and can't wait to witness this next week! This solar eclipse will be seen from all over Europe (I'll be watching it in the UK) as well as northern and eastern Asia and northern and western Africa. The further north you are, the greater the eclipse.
In light of the Oscar awards having been dealt out last night in America, I think it's worth mentioning some European movies as well. Iceland boasts some very good films - and indeed an Icelander, Jóhann Jóhannsson, was nominated for an Oscar last night for the soundtrack of The Theory of Everything, although he sadly didn't win. Only one Icelandic movie has ever been nominated for the best foreign movie at the Oscars, Children of Nature. At the moment I'm very excited about a British film that was released in UK cinemas last weekend, called The Duke of Burgundy and I can't wait to go
Now that the holidays are over and the January blues has faded away, then it’s getting nearer to Valentine’s Day. Whereas I’m all up for celebrating love and being in love and spreading love and having a lovely time, I’m not one of those people that celebrates Valentine’s day. In my opinion, it’s way too commercial and materialistic. Every day should be a day you cherish your loved one (or loved ones), not some day that society tells you to do it. And if you happen to be busy that day and can’t spend it with your wife/ husband/ girlfriend/ boyfriend/ partner/ soulmate/ lover/ WhateverYouWa
I'm aching to go back to Iceland. I haven't been since Easter and Easter was just one of the best holidays I've had in Iceland. I miss the music, the weather, the people - but mainly I miss the fish! You just can't get fish in the UK that's as exciting as the Icelandic fish. It's all deep fried with chips here. As much as I like fish and chips, it just isn't the same. There are many wonderful fish restaurants in Iceland and I have a few favourites (such as Við Fjöruborðið in Stokkseyri - the best langoustine in the world!) - but last time I was home, I found a new favourite - in Ísafjörð
A couple of months ago I received an e-mail from a guy called Stephen Markley. I have never met Stephen in real life but today I feel like I know him intimately. The reason why: I read his book called Tales of Iceland -or- Running With The Huldufólk in the Permanent Daylight. Stephen asked me in his e-mail if I would like to read his book and then write about it if I liked it. I've been busy at work and since I always cycle to work I don't get time to read on transport but I've been carrying this book with me everywhere I go for the past 2 months, this book has traveled from Iceland to Lon
The Blue lagoon spa in Iceland is considered to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. I think I can agree to that! In June I went to Iceland for just over 3 weeks. My friend was getting married, a couple of other friends were graduating, my dad had a birthday and I got to meet up with a lot of friends and loved ones. For the last 10 days of my stay in Iceland though, my (English) boyfriend came over to join me and then I got to play the tourist - one of my favourite things to do in Iceland! :) We biked all over the city, went to a few hot springs, drove to Snæfellsnes penins
Last weekend was pretty great. I went to a music festival called Field Day in London on the Saturday and then to Brighton for 3 days from Sunday to Tuesday. Music was great, food was good and Brighton has the best shops in England (unfortunately I had no money to spend though - but I was given a pair of shoes!) The sun even came out for a bit! Seeing the sun and going to a music festival just made me look forward to the continuous daylight and the upcoming festivals in Iceland - I'll be home in Iceland for over 3 weeks from next Friday! Normally when I'm in Iceland, I don't have much p
