Enjoy some of the Icelandic beer during a visitIn recent years, Iceland has developed quite the craft beer culture, with plenty of breweries and distilleries all over the country. We love our beer; it's the most popular drink in Iceland, but there was a time when we weren't allowed to enjoy it!

In fact, throughout most of the 20th century, beer was completely banned in Iceland, and it wasn't until March 1st, 1989, that it was allowed again! Since then, the date has been celebrated as Beer Day, and we encourage you to take part with an ice-cold drink.

Check out our video below to learn more about the interesting history of the day, how the ban came to be, why it was lifted, and how Icelanders celebrate!

There aren't really any formal celebrations for Beer Day, but it's a great time to experience the Reykjavik nightlife. It's one of those few times you'll actually want to show up a little early to get a nice seat at one of the best bars in Reykjavik.

This is really convenient if your Reykjavik accommodation is in the city center, so you won't have to worry about transport. If you're traveling with a rental car, just know that Iceland has a very low blood alcohol limit, so your designated driver will fully miss out! It's likely best to just go for a taxi, even if it can be a bit pricy.

Experience the Reykjavik nightlife and try the local beers!
