The Beautiful Elf City and Elf Church by Hotel Laki in South-Iceland

I recently went to explore an area of South Iceland called Landbrot. I had watched a TV program about this area and learned about the 11th-century wall, an Elf City and an Elf Church, a bunker where you could see ash layers from centuries ago, and many other interesting things. Top photo: The elf city The Elf City at Efri-Vík Those of you who read my travel blog know that I search for elf spots and elf stories all around Iceland - so visiting the land of Efri-Vík, on which the family-run Hotel Laki is located, was an unexpected treat for me. We stayed at the hotel for one night.   We

The Mysterious Snæfellsnes National Park Day Tour - West Iceland

Snæfellsnes peninsula is one of my favourite locations here in Iceland; it is absolutely magical, with so many interesting and beautiful sights.  You will see stretches of lava fields, amazing gorges, and waterfalls, lovely hamlets, basalt columns in abundance, mineral springs, and volcanoes - to name a few of the fantastic sights on the Snæfellsnes peninsula! I have written a 5-part series of travel blogs about the Snæfellsnes peninsula, but as many people have been asking me about guided tours to this area, I decided to join a guided tour. I chose the Mysterious Snæfellsnes National Park

The Museum of Icelandic Witchcraft and Sorcery at Hólmavík in the Westfjords Region of Iceland

A very popular museum is to be found in Hólmavík village, on the east side of the Westfjords Region of Iceland, which is a must-visit while in this area. This museum is called the Museum of Sorcery and Witchcraft or "Galdrasafnið" in Icelandic. Let's take a tour of this museum. Top photo: A creepy guy at the Sorcery museum Angurgapi magical stave The museum is on two floors and depicts the history of sorcery, which was seemingly powerful in this area of Iceland called Strandir. At the museum, you can learn all about Icelandic witchcraft - even how to make yourself invisible!  And y

Hólmavík in the Westfjords Region of Iceland - the Sorcery Town!

Hólmavík is a lovely town on the east coast of the Westfjord Region of Iceland, and the largest town in an area called Strandir.  In this area, Strandir, at Trékyllisvík, three men were burnt at the stake for sorcery in 1654. A witch craze followed, and this period in Iceland, from 1654-1690, is known as "Brennuöldin," or the Fire Century. Another 16 men and one woman were burnt at the stake, the last one in 1690. You can learn all about this at the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft in Hólmavík.  Top photo: Hólmavík village   The Huge Sea Turtle A giant sea turtle in Hólmaví

Skógasafn - Skógar Museum - An Excellent Regional Museum and Turf House in South Iceland

Visiting folk museums is something I love doing on my travels in my country. You will find an excellent district museum in South Iceland, that I recommend visiting - Skógar Museum (Skógasafn in Icelandic). At the museum, you can, for example. visit a turf house, but as those of you who have read my travel blogs know, I love turf houses and seek them out on my travels in Iceland. Top photo: the turf house at Skógasafn museum At Skógar museum   I have written many travel blogs about the few turf houses left in Iceland, as I want to introduce you to this old architectural heritage, which

The spectacular Skógafoss Waterfall in South Iceland and the Legend of the Treasure Chest

In this travel blog, I want to show you the spectacular Skógafoss waterfall, which has been my all-time favourite waterfall in Iceland since I first visited it as a child with my parents.  Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland, with a drop of some 60 meters and a width of 25 meters. You can walk right up to it, but be prepared to be drenched. It is quite overwhelming standing next to it. Top photo: a rainbow at Skógafoss Seeing that the waterfall produces a lot of drizzle, you will be able to see beautiful rainbows on sunny days. The most beautiful rainbows I have e

A lovely Stay in a Hotel right next to Skógafoss waterfall in South-Iceland!

The mystical Skógafoss waterfall in South Iceland has been my favourite waterfall ever since I first visited it with my parents as a small girl. I never get enough of this majestic waterfall and can stay by it for hours. As a treat for my birthday, I decided to stay at Hotel Skógar, which is almost next to the waterfall, so that I could enjoy my birthday by Skógafoss. Top photo: Skógafoss waterfall Hotel Skógar - our room   I booked a standard room at Hotel Skógar, a small and cosy hotel with 12 en-suite rooms. Mt. Pétursey in South Iceland and the Elves - Icelandic Folklore

When driving along the south coast of Iceland, you will notice a couple of mountains that used to be islands. One such mountain is a 275-meter-high tuff mountain that stands tall by Ring Road 1. Its name is Pétursey or Peter's Island. Most people pass these mountains at 90 km/h on their travels in my country, which is a shame, so I am going to tell you about the elves and supernatural beings living in them, and other interesting facts and accounts about these mountains. Top photo: Pétursey in the distance   Pétursey island Pétursey was called Eyjan há or Tall Island in the olden day

Skessugarður - the Rampart of the two Giantesses in East Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

In this travel blog, I am going to show you Skessugarður - the Rampart of the Giantess. It is a natural phenomenon in East Iceland, often called one of Iceland's most amazing natural formations. It consists of massive boulders (porphyritic basalt) forming a 300-meter-long, 5-meter-high natural wall. Folklore is connected to Skessugarður, which tells us about the giantesses who built this wall. Top photo: At Skessugarður Skessugarður - the Rampart of the two Giantesses    Skessugarður is a geological phenomenon: an ice-age glacier, the Brúarjökull, formed it. This was then followed b
