The Njarðvík Haunting - Innra-Hvannagil Gorge - a Ghost-Story from East Iceland

In Njarðvík in the Eastfjords of Iceland, and in Borgarfjörður-Eystri, you will find a very colourful gorge called Innra-Hvannagil gorge. This beautiful gorge is a golden rhyolite art of nature - tall screes filled with the most beautiful rhyolite rocks. Innra-Hvannagil gorge is very easily accessible. It is close to the main road, and you will find a parking lot close to the mouth of the gorge. After just a short hike, you will find yourself surrounded by the most amazing yellow-golden rhyolite.     Innra-Hvannagil gorge  I was lucky that the sun came out and lit up the gorge, maki

Lindarbakki Turf House in Borgarfjörður-Eystri in East Iceland

A cute little red-painted turf house catches one's eye in Bakkagerði village in Borgarfjörður-Eystri in East Iceland. As you might know from my previous travel blogs, I have written about almost all of the remaining turf houses and turf churches in Iceland.  These turf houses are of great interest to me, and I seek out these old houses on my travels in Iceland. Lindarbakki Turf House in Borgarfjörður-Eystri    The turf houses are our architectural heritage, but unfortunately, there are only a few of them left, most of which belong to Þjóðminjasafn Íslands - the National Museum of Ice

Njarðvíkurskriður Screes and the Monster Naddi in East Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

A big wooden cross stands tall by the road leading from Njarðvík to Bakkagerði in Borgarfjörður-Eystri in East Iceland.  A gravel road leads way up in the mountain, and by a curve in the road, you will find the big cross. A road passable to cars was opened here in 1950, but before then, people could travel between these two places only on foot or horseback. It was a dangerous route, mainly due to falling rocks, mudslides, and avalanches. But not only because of the landslide... The strangely looking Sound Sculpture Tvísöngur in Seyðisfjörður in East Iceland

In my last travel blog, I told you about the strangely shaped Dvergasteinn Dwarf Rock by Seyðisfjörður town. You will find another strangely shaped concrete structure on the other side of the fjord. This concrete structure is located on the mountainside above Seyðisfjörður town. It looks like five different-sized interconnected mushrooms with door openings, or a cluster of igloos! It looks surreal (in a good way), located up on the mountainside. Top photo: Tvísöngur Visiting Tvísöngur back in 2014   This structure is a sound sculpture by the German artist Lukas Kühne, titled "Tvísöngu

Dvergasteinn - the Rock of the Dwarves - by Seyðisfjörður in East-Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

On my travels in Iceland, I always seek out places connected to folklore. There is a myriad of such stories in Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar - the Compilation of Folklore by Jón Árnason, which is one of my favourite reads, all five volumes of it! While I was travelling in East Iceland,  I visited several such places, one of them being Dvergasteinn - the Rock of the Dwarves - which is folklore, related to a very peculiar rock in Vestdalseyri just outside Seyðisfjörður town. Top photo: in front of Dvergasteinn rock Dvergasteinn - the Rock of the Dwarves   The rock has got several big holes i

A Sapphire blue Crystal Ice Cave in Vatnajökull Glacier in South Iceland

Visiting the blue ice cave in the Vatnajökull glacier is something I will never forget; it left me speechless!  I was on a tour with the Guide to Iceland team to check out the ice caves in this area. We had already visited the beautiful aquamarine ice caves in Fláajökull glacier earlier that same day.  After visiting the ice cave in Fláajökull glacier, I was very excited about visiting another ice cave, as these rare natural ice caves are out of this world. Amazing aquamarine Ice Caves in Fláajökull in Vatnajökull glacier in Southeast-Iceland

Visiting an ice cave in the Vatnajökull glacier is a fantastic experience. I had seen some beautiful photos from inside the ice caves and very much wanted to see the caves for myself. I got the chance to visit them when the staff at Guide to Iceland went on a 2-day trip to visit two beautiful ice caves. So off we went to southeast Iceland to experience the ice caves. We spent the night at Hotel Smyrlabjörg, which is a lovely country hotel in the Vatnajökull region. Íslenski bærinn Turf House at Austur-Meðalholt in South Iceland

In this travel blog, I am going to show you the turf farm at Íslenski bærinn at Austur-Meðalholt, Flói, South Iceland. Íslenski bærinn actually means the Icelandic turf farm. Almost all of the remaining turf houses and turf churches in Iceland belong to the Historic Buildings Collection of Þjóðminjasafn Íslands - the National Museum of Iceland.  But not the turf farm of Austur-Meðalholt, it is in the possession of the farmer and artist Hannes Lárusson, who maintains the turf farm himself. A lovely Christmas Buffet at Fjörukráin Viking Restaurant in Iceland

I often visit the Viking restaurant Fjörukráin at the Viking Village just before Christmas to get a taste of their Christmas buffet, or jólahlaðborð as we call it in Icelandic.  Christmas buffets are ever so popular amongst us locals, and the restaurants quickly get fully booked. Top photo: at the lovely Christmas buffet Entertainment at Fjörukráin   This restaurant, Fjörukráin, is my favourite restaurant, and here you enter the world of the Vikings! It is located in the second-oldest building in Hafnarfjörður town, built in 1841.   We dined in the very ornate Viking-style restaurant
