Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach - great for adventure photography
This is my third blogpost on Guide to Iceland - and it is about yet another of my favourite places in Iceland, the Glacier Lagoon.
When you land in Iceland, you pretty quickly realise that things are different here. Very different. But more unique than many other things in Iceland is the Glacier Lagoon - and it is one of my absolute favourites to visit. Do not miss it during your Icelandic adventure.
What you might not know, is that the Glacier Lagoon is actually relatively new, and first started forming in 1934 when the Vatnajökull Glacier started retreating in the area, creating the lagoon that would fill with icebergs. In 1956 it had reached 4,5 kilometres in size and in 1975 it streched over 8 kilometres.
Today, the lagoon covers an area of approximately 18 square kilometres and is constantly getting larger, as pieces of ice break of the glacier and into the lagoon.
The Glacier Lagoon is a really great place for adventure photography and if you are lucky, you will catch a perfect reflection on the lagoon. You might just get to see a few seals as well.
Just opposite the entrance of the glacier lagoon (by the sea-side) you will find the Diamond Beach. Surprisingly, many people overlook the Diamond Beach - so do not make that mistake. I guess many visitors just don't know about it. It is truly amazing. Big pieces of ice, flushed up on the black sandy beach by the powerful waves, is a truly unique and breathtaking sight.
Why not play around with the camera and try to catch a few good shots by these places? I know I would.
