Öndverðarnes Cape - the Westernmost Point on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland

In this travel blog, I want to show you Öndverðarnes cape - the westernmost point of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland.  I have visited Öndverðarnes several times over the years, and it amazes me how many ruins can be found here. This blog is a side blog to my 5-part travel blog series about the interesting Snæfellsnes Peninsula. What you will first notice as you enter this area is the small orange lighthouse (only 5 meters tall), Öndverðarnesviti, built in 1973, with a couple of parking spaces next to it.  Top photo: Öndverðarnesviti lighthouse at Öndverðarnes   Ruins at Öndv

The Fishermen's Garden and Maritime Museum in Hellissandur on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland

Hellissandur is one of the villages on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland. It is the first village you will encounter on the peninsula after driving 195 km from the capital city of Reykjavík. This travel blog is a side blog of my 5-part travel blog series about the interesting Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Top photo: the entrance to the park Þorvaldarbúð turf houses at the Fishermen's Garden  Hellissandur is one of the oldest fishing villages in Iceland. In the olden times, there was a big, vibrant fishing community here, with some 60 seasonal fishermen's huts in 1700

The Sisters and the Elves - Icelandic Folklore - New Year's Eve & Christmas Customs

Deep-rooted in the Icelandic national spirit is the old belief in the elves and the hidden people of Iceland. I have written several travel blogs over the years, showing you many different elf locations across Iceland. We also have many customs related to the elves, most of which are no longer practiced. In this travel blog, I translated a couple of well-known Icelandic folklore into English to show you some of the elf customs related to Christmas and New Year's Eve. A Fantastic Visit to the Ice Cave in Langjökull Glacier - Snowmobiling and a Dip in the Secret Lagoon

I have been writing travel blogs for Guide to Iceland for 13 years about various interesting locations in Iceland, folklore, and the Vikings, and have written  320 travel blogs to date. I am doing this for fun, and one of the greatest perks of being an Iceland travel blogger is joining various guided tours around Iceland. I then write a travel blog about the tours to show you what they are like. I joined the Glacier Super Jeep and Ice Cave Tour - Langjokull and The Secret Lagoon with Mountaineers of Iceland. Beautiful white Snow in Laugardalur Valley in Reykjavík

I love the feeling of walking around Reykjavík when it first starts snowing, mainly when the snow covers my city like a thick, white, velvety blanket. A couple of years ago, we got so much snow that it hadn't snowed as much in Reykjavík since 1979. I remember the winter of 1979 well; once, during a bad blizzard in Reykjavík, I got lost and didn't know whether I was coming or going, or whether I was walking on the street or the pavement! All of a sudden, there was absolutely no visibility. It was like being lost in a fog, only this was a roaring ice-cold blizzard! It took me an hour to

The Daughter of the Minister - Prestsdóttirin frá Prestbakka á Síðu - Icelandic Folklore

Through the years, I have often told you about the Icelandic elves in my travel blog. Our Icelandic folklore is filled with stories and encounters with the Icelandic elves and the Hidden People of Iceland. I found one such story called Prestsdóttir - the Daughter of the Minister. It tells you the story of the revenge of the Icelandic elves in South Iceland. Top photo: Prestbakkakirkja church in the wintertime The church at Prestbakki at Síða is special in a way that the pulpit is located in the middle of the church and not to the side   Here is the folklore as it is told in Þjóðsögur

The Elf-church Álfakirkja at Laugarvatnsvellir plains in Iceland

Remember when I told you about the Laugarvatnshellir cave in my travel blog, Laugarvatnshellir Cave & the Cave People of Iceland? Two families inhabited these caves in the last century, and you can take guided tours to see what life was like in the caves. Top photo: by the elf-church The elf-church as seen from a distance A short distance from the cave, you will find a distinctive rock, which is believed to be an elf-church, Álfakirkja.   Seeing that the weather was glorious when I last visited Laugarvatnshellir, I decided to hike to the elf-church. It was sunny and still, and the s

Beautiful Northern Lights in Reykjavík and Winter Activities in Iceland

I have noticed that one of the main sights our foreign visitors want to see in Iceland in the wintertime is the Northern Lights. I am often asked whether there will be Northern Lights tonight or in January, February, etc., and at what time the lights will be on, as it were, but we locals honestly never know when they will show up. Check out the best Northern Lights Tours: Northern Lights Tours in Iceland. A breathtaking View from Hringsbjarg Cliff on Tjörnes Peninsula in North Iceland

Hringsbjarg cliff is a 60-metre-high cliff on the east side of the Tjörnes peninsula in North-East Iceland.  From the cliff, you will have a spectacular view of Fjallahöfn and the vast plains of the Kelduhverfi county, which divide the Tjörnes peninsula and Öxarfjörður fjord.      During the puffin season in Iceland, this is an excellent location to watch this delightful bird with its colourful beak and orange feet. Top photo: the view from Hringsbjarg cliff Puffins are so cute   An observation platform has been set up on Hringsbjarg cliff, along with some railings, but I remember s
