I often visit the pretty little villages on the south coast of Iceland, Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki - where the pace of life is much different than that of Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, where I live. In this travel-blog, I will be showing you what I find so alluring about Eyrarbakki village, which has got around 570 inhabitants. Back in the 18th century Eyrarbakki was a very vibrant community and served as a centre for fashion and culture in Iceland. Here you could find one of Iceland's biggest ports and trading centres in Iceland serving the south coast of Iceland all the way to Mt. Lóm

In my search for turf houses around Iceland, I visited the lovely little turf house Sænautasel, which is a rebuilt turf house on Jökuldalsheiði heath in the highland of Iceland. It is, in my opinion, an extremely cute turf house, built from scratch from the remains of an earlier turf house. Sænautasel turf house Sænautasel dates back to 1843 and for 95-100 years people lived in this beautiful turf house - until 1943 when the last people moved out. From 1841 until 1862 sixteen turf houses were built on the heath and at some point, 120 people lived in this area, which is approximately 500

Was the first Christian Church in Iceland built at Esjuberg in Kjalarnes?

A beautiful Celtic stone cross has been erected at the outdoor altar at Esjuberg at Kjalarnes in southwest Iceland. Do you know why it was erected in this spot? Landnáma - the Icelandic Book of Settlements, tells us that the Christian settler Örlygur gamli built the first Christian church in Iceland around the year 900 here at Esjuberg. So the site of the Celtic cross might be the oldest church site in Iceland. And as such it deserves a memorial. The mystical Caves of Hella - are they the Oldest Man-made Structure in Iceland

In the southern part of Iceland, from Ölfus to Vík, you will find ancient caves that are very easily accessible. In this area, more than a hundred man-made caves have been discovered. The best-known of these caves are the mystical Ægissíðuhellar - Hellarnir á Hellu - the Caves of Hella. They are amongst the largest man-made caves in Iceland. In this travel-blog I want to tell you about the Saga protagonist Gísli Súrsson, who was one of Iceland's best-known outlaws. Gísli's saga is told in Gísla saga Súrssonar - the Saga of Gísli the Outlaw. We Icelanders know this story well as we have to read it in school when we are teenagers. Gísli was on the run for 13 years in the Westfjords of Iceland, after having killed his brother-in-law in his bed-closet while his pregnant sister was lying next to her husband! In the beautiful Westfjords of Iceland, you will find many of Iceland's pearls of nature, some of which I have shown you in other travel-blogs. And in the many fjords in the Westfjords, small hamlets are dotted along the coastline. In this travel-blog I want to show you the very scenic drive across Jökulháls mountain pass on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This road, F-570, is only open for a couple of months in the summertime. The Jökulháls mountain pass will take you from Útnesvegur road no 574 from Arnarstapi in the south to Ólafsvík village on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. In this travel-blog I want to tell you about a multi-talented artist who lives in the Westfjords of Iceland, Marsibil Guðbjörg Kristjánsdóttir, nicknamed Billa. I got to know Marsibil in the summer of 2024, when I visited Þingeyri village in Dýrafjörður fjord twice in the fall and fell in love with her work, the beautiful Skeljaverur dolls.
