The beautiful Bustarfell Turf House in East Iceland

One of the best-preserved turf houses in Iceland is the beautiful red Bustarfell Manor in North-East Iceland, near Vopnafjörður. It is a large turf house comprising 17 houses! I seek out all of the traditional Icelandic turf houses on my travels here in my country. I love these old houses, the architecture of which dates back to the Settlement of Iceland in the 9th century.  Inside the Bustarfell turf house in East Iceland Here in this lovely manor, people lived from 1770 until 1966.   Bustarfell is now a museum, and here one can turn back the clock and enter a different world. The amazing Lake Askja & Víti explosion Crater in the Highland of Iceland

I went on a truly memorable 14-hour guided tour of the highland of Iceland. Our destination was the Askja caldera and the Víti explosion crater. There had been an earthquake and landslide in July by Askja, and the water level of Lake Askja was now 2 meters higher than before. I was lucky to visit this area early in August, as on the 29th of August, the earthquakes started for real, and a volcanic eruption started, and lasted for 6 months! We drove from Akureyri town towards Mývatn at 6:30 in the morning and picked up more passengers there. We then headed straight towards the highland, got

The Study Centre on Leader-sheep in North-East Iceland - the Unique Breed of Icelandic Sheep

I have been showing you things to do and places to visit in North-East Iceland in my last travel blogs. After a 7-km hike on Rauðanes cape in North-East Iceland, I visited a lovely little study centre in the vicinity, in Þistilfjörður bay. It is a study centre on a unique breed of Icelandic sheep called forystufé in Icelandic, which serves as the leader of the horde, a very resilient, intelligent, and stubborn breed of sheep. Top photo: heads of the leader sheep, which have been kept after their death   At the Study Centre on Leader-wethers These sheep can only be found in Iceland;

The Beautiful Rauðanes Cape in North-East Iceland - Extraordinary Rock Formations

After staying in Raufarhöfn village for 2 nights, we said our goodbyes and visited two more places in North-East Iceland before continuing our journey around Iceland. We drove south on the Melrakkaslétta peninsula and headed towards Rauðanes cape.  Rauðanes cape is located in Þistilfjörður fjord, midway between Raufarhöfn village and Þórshöfn village. It is dotted with beautiful and strange rock formations and sea stacks, hidden beaches, and big caves. Grettisbæli - the Lair of the Viking Grettir the Strong in Öxarnúpur in North-East Iceland

On our trip to Melrakkaslétta plain in North-East Iceland, we drove down to Axarfjörður fjord - also called Öxarfjörður, where one can find a lair of the outlaw, Grettir the Strong Ásmundarson (born around 996). Grettir was one of Iceland's best-known outlaws, and his story is told in the Grettis Saga, which was written in the 14th century. Top photo: Grettisbæli lair See these massive basalt columns on top of the lair!   Grettir is known as the longest-surviving outlaw in my country's history; he was an outlaw for almost 20 years! In Iceland, outlaws could gain their freedom after

Kópasker Village on Melrakkaslétta Plain in North-East Iceland

After we visited Rauðinúpur cape at the northwest corner of the Melrakkaslétta plain peninsula, we continued south and visited one of the peninsula's two villages, Kópasker. The inhabitants of Kópasker are only approximately 121, and meat processing is the biggest industry here. Top photo: Snartarstaðarkirkja church at Kópasker By 2 of the characters at Kópasker made by the artist Sigurlína   Just outside of Kópasker village, we came across some more fun characters made by the Icelandic artist Sigurlína J. Rauðinúpur Cape and the 2 Sea Stacks on Melrakkaslétta in North-East Iceland

On my travels along the Melrakkaslétta peninsula in North-East Iceland, I drove around the peninsula and visited as many of the beautiful sights as I could. This area is very rich in birdlife, and the tranquillity so far north is almost unsurpassed. I was heading for Rauðinúpur or Red Cape, which protrudes 73 meters out of the North-West end of the Melrakkaslétta plain. I had already visited one of the northernmost places on the mainland of Iceland, Hraunhafnartangi, that same day, and was longing for more of the same. Rauðinúpur is located at 65°28'23.29" north. Hraunhafnartangi and Þorgeirsdys - one of the Northernmost Spots on the Mainland of Iceland

On our second day on the Melrakkaslétta peninsula in North-East Iceland, we headed for Hraunhafnartangi spit, which lies at 66° 32′ 9.6″ N, 16° 1′ 31.08″ W, making it one of the northernmost points on the mainland of Iceland, together with Rifstangi, which is also close by here on Melrakkaslétta.   In July 2016, it was confirmed by Landmælingar Íslands - the National Land Survey of Iceland that Rifstangi is located 68 metres further north than Hraunhafnartangi.  Top photo: on the way to Hraunhafnartangi It is so peaceful and serene in this part of Iceland Only the island of Grímsey is

Raufarhöfn - the Arctic Circle Village in NE-Iceland - & the Mystical Arctic Henge

In this travel blog, I want to tell you about a beautiful area of Iceland that visitors often overlook, the Melrakkaslétta peninsula in North-East Iceland. You will find Melrakkaslétta north of a very popular area in the North, with all the beautiful stops on the Diamond Circle. The Diamond Circle is my favourite jewel circle in Iceland, and it is well worth driving further up north and checking out the less-visited areas of Iceland, where you can experience the stillness of nature.
