Grásteinn Rock in Reykjavík - is this Rock the Home of the Icelandic Elves?
A rock split in two can be found in the Grafarholt suburb on the outskirts of Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city. It is located by ring-road 1 on Vesturlandsvegur road on the land of Keldur. In this rock, Grásteinn or Grey-stone, some elves are said to live, and it makes for an interesting story of how we found out about the elves in this rock. Top photo: the split Grásteinn rock Visiting Grásteinn with a friend from England During road construction in 1970-1971, the workers meant to move the rock, which weighs some 50 tonnes. But the machinery started breaking down, which invariably happ
The temperamental Giantess Jóra in Jórukleif and the Lava Pots by Selfoss in South-Iceland
In the middle of the Ölfusá river in South Iceland, a lone rock with one Christmas tree on top might catch your eye. Ölfusá river is Iceland's largest river by volume and the water in it at some point created Iceland's best-known waterfall; the majestic Gullfoss in Hvítá glacial river. Top photo: Jóruklettur rock in Ölfusá river The information sign by Ölfusá river tells us about Jóra the giantess Old folklore in Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar - the Collection of Folklore of Jón Árnason, tells us the story of how this rock came to get its place in the middle of this glacial river. Apparently,
The mystical Rauðhólar Pseudocraters and Tröllabörn - the Troll Children in SW-Iceland
In this travel-blog I am going to show you a special phenomenon that you pass when you drive on ring-road 1 just east of Reykjavík city. You will notice a cluster of dark maroon hills. These hills are called Rauðhólar - Red Hills and are around 5,000 years old pseudocraters - give or take a few years. Top photo: a lovely couple on top of one of the pseudocraters Rauðhólar pseudocraters Pseudocraters are as far as I know rarely seen outside of Iceland and on the planet Mars, so they are quite an interesting phenomenon. They are formed when 1,100°C molten lava flows over ponds and swamp
The gentle Giantess in the Cave in Keflavík in SW-Iceland - Skessan í hellinum
In a mysterious cave by the marina in Keflavík town lives a Giantess with a heart of gold. The Black Cave of the Giantess was opened on the 6th of September 2008 during the town festival Ljósanótt - Night of Lights. On that day the Giantess moved all the way from her mountain into the cave in SW-Iceland. She doesn't have a name, as she has forgotten it, but is referred to as Giganta - Skessan in Icelandic. Skessan í hellinum - the Giantess in the Cave The Giantess is a character in the story of Sigga and the Giantess, by the Icelandic author Herdís Egilsdóttir from Húsavík in North Icela
Laugarvatnshellir Cave and the Cave People of Iceland
In this travel-blog I want to tell you about Laugarvatnshellir - the Cave of Laugarvatn. It is quite a remarkable cave, as two families lived in it in the last century, and two children were even born in this cave. Laugarvatnshellir is one of the very few caves in Iceland in which people actually lived. It was normal for outlaws to live in caves, but not for the common Icelander. Explore the beautiful Snæfellsnes Peninsula on a Day Tour with Tröll Expeditions
I recently joined a guided tour of the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula with Tröll Expeditions, which is an excellent travel company with many guided tours in small groups. On our bus were only 4 other passengers so we had quite a lovely time and felt like we were friends travelling together. I have already written a detailed guide of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in 5 parts for those of you who want to explore the peninsula on your own, but I also want to show you what the guided tours to the peninsula are like. Glacier Hike & Ice Climbing on Sólheimajökull glacier in South-Iceland
At last, I joined a glacier hike tour on Sólheimajökull glacier in South-Iceland. As even though I have lived here in Iceland my whole life I had never gone glacier hiking before. I have been inside the ice cave tunnel in Langjökull a couple of times and visited the ice-caves - and walked to the edge of several glaciers, but never really experienced a glacier up close and personal until now. Sólheimajökull, which translates into Sun World Glacier, is an icefall or glacial tongue which extends down from Iceland's fourth largest glacier, Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Hidden beneath the ice cap one o
The lovely little Village Eyrarbakki on the South Coast of Iceland & Húsið - the House
I often visit the pretty little villages on the south coast of Iceland, Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki - where the pace of life is much different than that of Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, where I live. In this travel-blog, I will be showing you what I find so alluring about Eyrarbakki village, which has got around 570 inhabitants. Back in the 18th century Eyrarbakki was a very vibrant community and served as a centre for fashion and culture in Iceland. Here you could find one of Iceland's biggest ports and trading centres in Iceland serving the south coast of Iceland all the way to Mt. Lóm
The Lava Tunnel: The Extraordinary Raufarhólshellir Lava Cave in South Iceland
Raufarhólshellir lava cave - the Lava Tunnel - is one of the extraordinary lava caves in Iceland. It has just recently been made more accessible to visitors and reopened with guided tours in June 2017. It is such a delight visiting this 4th longest lava cave in Iceland. On a guided tour of Raufarhólshellir cave I had visited it on a couple of occasions before a footbridge and stairs were added to it, and I am so glad that it is so accessible and easy to visit now. I once showed it to a girlfriend from London and she was all but traumatized after the visit, as she was not used to walki
The remote Strandir in Iceland - Stillness & Sorcery
Join me on a day tour of one of the remotest areas of Iceland - the scenic Strandir. While some 7,000 people live in the Westfjords Region of Iceland, 4,000 of whom live in the capital city of the Westfjords, Ísafjörður, only some 43 people live in Árneshreppur rural district at Strandir. In my previous travel-blog, I told you about the beautiful nature and hot pools by Hotel Laugarhóll, where I stayed for the night. And showed you the lesser-known Goðafoss waterfall, which bears the same name as its famous namesake up north. Top photo: a map of the Strandir area Goðafoss waterfall at S
