Interior of Space Odyssey record store in Reykjavík with shelves of vinyl, tapes, and zines, warm lighting, and a view of the street through the door.

Reykjavik isn't short on charm, but few places capture the city's creative energy like Space Odyssey. This independent record shop, label, second-hand store, and performance space is all about celebrating experimental sound and underground culture in Iceland.

Founded by husband and wife duo Pan Thorarensen and Guðrún Lárusdóttir, the store has deep roots in the local scene. Pan is also the founder of Extreme Chill, Iceland's long-running annual festival for ambient and electronic music.

The shop originally opened on Skolavordustigur, a well-known street in central Reykjavik, but later closed before reopening in a new downtown location just a few steps away. Through Space Odyssey, the founders continue to support and share Iceland's independent music scene with listeners from around the world.

Inside, you'll find a carefully selected collection of new and used vinyl, cassette tapes, zines (independent magazines), and rare releases. The focus is on ambient, electronic, and experimental music, with many titles from small Icelandic labels and international underground scenes. The selection changes often, so each visit brings the chance to discover something rare and personal.

The shop also includes a curated selection of second-hand clothing, offering travelers a chance to browse unique pieces that reflect Reykjavik's alternative style.

The space is calm, minimalist, and welcoming, with soft lighting and a high-quality sound system. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable, ready to help you discover something new or let you browse at your own pace.

On certain days, you may also catch a live set or listening session, which are streamed on Space Odyssey's YouTube channel for others to enjoy beyond the shop.

Space Odyssey is more than a shop. It's a creative corner of the city and a must-visit for anyone who wants to experience a different side of Reykjavik.
