An amazing Tour to Askja and Holuhraun Lava Field in the Highland of Iceland

In August 2016, I joined an 11-hour tour of the highland of Iceland to visit the Askja caldera and the Víti explosion crater. I had joined this tour exactly 2 years earlier, after a major earthquake and landslide in July 2014, which raised the water level of Lake Askja by 2 meters.  Just after my visit, a volcanic eruption started, which lasted for 6 months! So I was eager to see the newest lava field in Iceland, Holuhraun. We met up with the guide, Erlendur, at Mývatn very early in the morning as we had a long, exciting day ahead of us.  Top photo: Víti explosion crater   Hrossaborg

3 days of fun at Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 3

Reykhólar village has a population of around 108 (2024), and the Reykhólahreppur county has a population of 246 (2025), give or take a few. It is a very peaceful community, and I love the pretty signs they have put up to remind us to drive slowly and think of the children in the village.  The sign by the road, in the photo above, reads "Think of the children". And the sign below reads "Don't drive fast or no speeding". This is my 3rd travel blog in my 3-part series on Reykhólar, where I had such a lovely stay. The other two travel blogs are: A lovely 3-Day-Stay at Reykhólar in the We

3 Days of Fun at Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 2 - the Reykhólar Seabaths

This travel blog is a continuation of my travel blog, A Lovely 3-day Stay in Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 1. There is just so much to see and do in this area that I ended up writing three travel blogs about Reykhólar. After visiting the beautiful area of the loons, the day was only to get better, as now I popped in at the Reykhólar Seabaths to see if they had a spot for me, as the weather was heavenly.  The Reykhólar Seabaths We had decided to hike to the northernmost glacier in Iceland, Drangajökull, but I very much wanted to try out the sea baths. So we visited the glacie

3 days of fun at Reykhólar in the Westfjords Region - Part 1

On my 9-day exploration of the beautiful Westfjords of Iceland, I was now on my 7th day, and after having stayed in Patreksfjörður town for the night, I thought to myself that it was time to head north to Akureyri town. But before we headed north, we wanted to explore the southern part of the Westfjords Region better. We had already been on a tour to Rauðasandur and Látrabjarg, which are the best-known pearls in the southern part of the Westfjords Region, but there were still some lesser-known areas that I wanted to explore.  Top photo: Reykhólar hostel Reykhólar hostel By now, we we

The Natural Wonders of the Westfjords of Iceland - Látrabjarg and Rauðasandur

While spending 9 days in the Westfjords, I joined Westfjords Adventures on a guided tour of two of the main attractions in the Westfjords: Látrabjarg bird cliff and Rauðasandur, the Red Sand. Westfjords Adventures offers an excellent selection of tours to some of Iceland's most amazing sights in the Westfjords. They are located in Patreksfjörður, the largest village in the southern part of the Westfjord Region. When I travel around Iceland, I like to get to know the locals in each part of the country. That way, I get to learn so much more about my country. I do this by visiting the local museum in each village, since almost every village and town in Iceland has at least one. I have found that the older generation, in particular, is very knowledgeable about Iceland, and I love to sit, listen, and learn more. And then I write about my experiences here on Guide to Iceland and tell you about all the things I have learned and seen on my travels :) Top photo: having coffee with Jóhann, the manager of H

Visiting Grímsey Island - the Gem of the Arctic Circle in North Iceland

I had forever wanted to visit Grímsey Island and had planned to do so for years, but had always left it off my travel itinerary. Finally, when staying in Akureyri, the Capital of the North, for a whole week on my summer vacation, I did it! I visited this beautiful island on the Arctic Circle Express with the company  Ambassador from Akureyri harbour.  Unfortunately, this tour is no longer available. Certain northern winds on this route made people very seasick, so it was cancelled! But the Arctic Circle Express Flight will take you on a 3-hour tour including Grímsey Island. Whales blowi

Humpback Whales in Abundance on a Whale Watching Tour from Akureyri in North-Iceland

I recently went whale watching in Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. This was the second time in my life that I have gone whale watching, and after the Whale Watching Akureyri tour, I can tell you that I am now hooked, so to speak. We saw so many whales that I was astounded.  I was staying in Akureyri for a week on my summer vacation and was referred to the whale-watching company Ambassador, which has now merged with Elding Adventure at Sea. A Unique Lava Walk through the Colourful Lava Field at Gjástykki at Krafla in North-Iceland

I visited the extraordinary, colourful lava field Gjástykki when I joined a guided tour of this area. At Gjástykki, you will see newly created lava formations from the Krafla volcano-tectonic eruptions back in 1975-1984, called the Krafla Fires.  I had never been there before, so I was excited to visit this area. I followed the Katla Fires on the news when I was younger, and the name Gjástykki had always sounded so exotic to me. I had wanted to visit it for the longest time, as I visit the Krafla area every year. So when I saw there was a guided tour to Gjástykki, I jumped at the chance to
