Hike to a free concert with Ásgeir Trausti!
Are you a fan of hiking and good music? Tomorrow evening there will be a free concert with Ásgeir Trausti on the top of Esjan, the mountain overlooking Reykjavík. Don't miss out!
Time and date of the concert
Friday 29th of May 2015: From 6pm DJ Yamaho will be playing on the top of the mountain, by the rock on the very top of the mountain. From 8pm Ásgeir and his band will start playing - and the entry is completely free.
Ásgeir Trausti has become quite the international sensation recently and he and his band have just finished a 2 year long tour around the world. His last concert for now will be this one on Esjan and then one in Reykjavík's Concert Hall, Harpa on the 16th of June. After that, he will start working on his next album.
So if you haven't seen him perform yet, this is a great opportunity! He's just released a few videos with the Icelandic lyrics to his songs (amazing lyrics might I add), so if you want to be able to hum along, you can practice with this video:
How do I get to the top of Esjan?
It's only a short drive to reach Esjan from Reykjavík by car, about 30 minutes from the centre of town. If you don't have a car, you can also take the bus to the roots of the mountain (Esjurætur). Route 57 goes from Ártún to Esjurætur and to get to Ártún from the centre of Reykjavík you can take route 5 from Hlemmur. More information can be found on the bus website of Reykjavík.
From the roots of the mountain it's about a 2 hour hike to the top, a little less if you're in great shape. And another 2 hours (or maybe 1,5 hours) to go down. Obviously, the nights are already bright, so you don't need to worry about it becoming dark because of the midnight sun in Iceland.
What if I don't want to hike?
This concert is sponsored by telephone company Nova and a helicopter company called Helo. If you don't think you're fit enough to hike the mountain, or just don't like hiking, you can always splash out on a helicopter ride up or down (6500 ISK one way).
Helicopter riding in Iceland is fun - so even though it's a pricy ride for just a couple of minutes, (I assume the ride is about 5 minutes tops!) then you might want to treat yourself if you've never been before! If it's a clear sky, the view of Reykjavík (and maybe even all the way to Snæfellsnes) is great!
