Hóp søen Rejseguide
Lake Hop is a tidal lake in North Iceland. It is the fifth-largest lake in the country and popular for fishing.
The best way to visit this area is on a relaxed self drive tour. One of the best options for doing so is this 7-day Arctic Coast Way self drive, available in the summer months.
The lake is situated around 35 km from Blonduos, on the borders of Western and Eastern Hunavatnassysla. Depending on the tide, the size of the lake may vary from 29 to 44 km2.
Plenty of brown and char can be found in the lake as well as salmon, sea trout and sea char. The size of the sea trouts and sea chars may reach 6 pounds. Also note that the rivers Gjufura and Vididalsa, which both fall into the lake, are among the best in the country for trout and salmon fishing.
Good fishing grounds include Asbjarnanes, Skollanes and Myrkubjorg. At Asbjarnarnes there is further a good fishing cabin with room for 15-20 people, though it's not possible to stay overnight.
In order to fish, you must apply for a fishing permit, 'Veidikortid'. Flies, worms and lures are all allowed as bait. The fishing season is from spring to September 30th and it's open 12 hours a day. The best time to fish varies between years, though May is often ideal.
For accommodation, camping is free in the area and Hotel Borgarvirki is close to the lake.
