The Majestic Canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur
If you have never been to this canyon before I sure recommend a little trip up there. The canyon is up to 100 m deep and 2 km long and it is located in southeast Iceland not so far away from the village Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The river Fjaðrá runs through it. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon was created by progressive erosion by flowing water from glaciers through the rocks over a long period of time, some say 9000 years ago.
Its not difficult to get there because its not far away from the main ring road and the gravel road that leads you up there is in good condition. Once there you can park the car and walk along the canyon all the way to the top. I sure recommend that hike because the view is constantly changing ending up there with a beautiful waterfall and breathtaking view. Well the canyon does not end there quite but its a good place to end your walk and simply enjoy the majestic view in all direction with the sound of the water.
There is a possibility to walk down from the parking place and get a totally different view standing right next to those big rocky massive walls with endless view into the valley. The river is not very big or deep so if you have good sturdy boots on your feet you could possibly take a little hike through the canyon but note to self you need to wade the river a little bit. If you do that you need to walk the same way back because at some point you will confront some waterfalls that are impossible to cross.
From my point of view a 5 star place with endless opportunities for both photographing and simply enjoying beautiful nature with some hiking as well. Enjoy your travelling to Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon!
