In this travel blog, I am going to tell you about the giantess who lives in Kerlingaskarð pass. Kerlingarskarð pass is a rugged mountain pass on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland.  This mountain pass lies 310 m above sea level, and here used to be the thoroughfare from Helgafellssveit on the northern part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula to Miklaholtshreppur on the southern part.   Top photo: Kerling in Kerlingarskarð pass   Lóndrangar cliffs Kerlingarskarð pass is no longer maintained, and the road is in pretty bad condition. Hofsstaðir in Garðabær Town - a Viking Settlement Age Farm in South-West Iceland

In this travel blog, I am going to tell you about a Settlement Age farm that was discovered in 1986 in Garðabær, a part of the Great-Reykjavík area.  It is a large Viking Age longhouse dating back to 870-930, measuring 8x30 meters on the outside and with a floor surface of 170 sq m, which is quite large for a longhouse. Top photo: Hofsstaðir Viking longhouse and Vídalínskirkja church Hofsstaðir Viking longhouse   We don't know who lived here, but it looks like a longhouse of a wealthy farmer.  It is believed that 20-30 people lived on the farm, and it was most likely inhabited until

Skriðuklaustur and the Archaeological Excavations in East Iceland

Skriðuklaustur is a beautiful place to visit on your travels in East Iceland. It is a Centre of History and Culture (Gunnarsstofnun) and one of Iceland's greatest historical sites. The last Catholic monastery in Iceland, an Augustinian monastery, operated on this spot from 1493 to 1552. Its primary function over these 60 years was to attend to the sick.  This beautiful building is the former home of the noted author Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889-1975). The Holy Mt. Helgafell on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula & the 3 Wishes

The historical Mt. Helgafell - the Sacred Hill - on the Snæfellsnes peninsula is, in the eyes of many of us Icelanders, a sacred place. It is a common belief amongst the locals that if you hike to the top of the mountain without looking back or uttering a word, you will get 3 wishes fulfilled. This only works the first time you hike the mountain, though, so most Icelanders have already done this hike and received their wishes. Top photo: Mt. Helgafell   Helgafellskirkja church Mt. Helgafell is 73 meters tall, and it takes about 8-10 minutes to hike to the top, if that, as the ascent

Mt. Kirkjufell & Kirkjufellsfoss in Grundarfjörður - the most photographed Mountain in Snæfellsnes

In this travel blog, I am going to show you Mt. Kirkjufell (463 m), the most prominent mountain in Grundarfjörður on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and a landmark of the fishing town.  The mountain is free-standing and referred to as the most beautiful mountain on the Snæfellsnes peninsula - some even say the whole of Iceland. At least it is the most photographed mountain. Top photo: Mt. Kirkjufell Mt. Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall   The name Kirkjufell means "Church Mountain" because it is thought to resemble a church. And the mountain next to it, Stöðin, is said to resemble

In this travel blog, I am going to show you Ólafsvík, a lovely little fishing town on the north side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula with a population of some 1,000 people.   As in every town and village in Iceland, you will find a museum here in Ólafsvík, a folk museum located in an old, preserved storehouse, dating back to 1844.  Top photo: Ólafsvík town as seen from the view-dial Ólafsvíkurkirkja church   Joined together, the neighbouring villages Hellissandur, Rif, and the town Ólafsvík are called the Snæfellsbær municipality.  Ólafsvík, or the Cove of Ólafur, is named after the set

The Historical Ingjaldshóll on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland

Ingjaldshóll on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland is one of the historical sites in Iceland - a former settlement manor and an assembly, and important officials lived here.  This travel blog is a side blog to my 5-part travel blog series about the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula. Ingjaldshóll was in the possession of the powerful and wealthy Sturlunga Clan for a while, but they controlled this part of Iceland during the 12th and 13th centuries. Írskrabrunnur - the Well of the Irish is an ancient well on the west side of the Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, probably dating back to the Settlement of Iceland in the 9th century AD. This travel blog is a side blog to my 5-part travel blog series about the beautiful Snæfellsnes peninsula. You will find this old well at Gufuskálar by Útnesvegur road 574, heading towards Hellissandur village. Turn left onto a paved road by these 2 signs: Gufuskálavör and Írskrabrunnur.
