Möðrudalur - the Highest Located Farm in Iceland

Right in the middle of "nowhere" in the wilderness of Iceland, you will find the highest inhabited farm in Iceland Möðrudalur á Fjöllum - Möðrudalur in Öræfi at 469 meters (1,539 ft) above sea level. It is like entering an oasis after having driven through the rugged wilderness of Iceland. There has been a farm in Möðrudalur since the settlement of Iceland and one of the leading farms of Iceland was located here in the olden times. Important crossroads were in this area, the Trail of the Bishops and the Trail of Sámur, but you can read about Sámur in the Viking Saga Hrafnkel's saga freysgoð

Djúpivogur Village in East-Iceland and the Eggs at Gleðivík Bay

By the harbour in the lovely little village of Djúpivogur in East-Iceland, you will find a bay called Gleðivík or Merry bay. In that bay, a hidden treasure is to be found - a distinctive outdoor artwork hidden away from sight. This is an artwork by the popular Icelandic visual artist, Sigurður Guðmundsson, called Eggin í Gleðivík - the Eggs at Merry bay. The noted artist Sigurður Guðmundsson has received several international awards for his visual artwork. Eggin in Gleðivík - the Eggs at Merry bay The outside artwork consists of 34 huge granite eggs which represent the eggs of each of t

Kvernufoss Waterfall - the less visited Neighbour of Skógafoss in South-Iceland

Kvernufoss waterfall is a beautiful 30-meter high (98 ft) waterfall that is half-hidden away in a gorge in South Iceland, yet very close to the ring-road. It is located on the east side of the popular Skógafoss waterfall and used to be overlooked by travellers.  I first visited it back in 2010 but had often ogled it from the ring road when driving east after visiting Skógafoss waterfall. Kvernufoss Waterfall  I decided to write a travel-blog about my visit to Kvernufoss to see if it would catch on, and it sure did :) I have been writing travel-blogs for 12 years now for Guide to Icela

Next to the very popular Geysir geothermal area in South Iceland, you will find one of our national treasures; the huge Haukadalsskógur forest - Iceland standard -, a lovely church, and a small geothermal pool in which one can bathe. Very few people visit it as they go straight from Geysir to Gullfoss waterfall, which are 2 of the main attractions of the Golden Circle, which is the most popular day tour in Iceland. The Mystical Nauthúsagil Ravine in South Iceland & its beautiful Waterfalls

There are some hidden places in Iceland, which are like out of this world. I visited one of them recently, the mystical Nauthúsagil ravine in South Iceland, which translated to English means Bull Shed Ravine. I know that the name sounds a bit strange, but I will explain how this name came about a little further on in my travel-blog. Top photo: a hidden waterfall in Nauthúsagil ravine The beginning of the hike into Nauthúsagil Characteristic of Nauthúsagil is the rowan that grows on the rims of the ravine and in some places it creates a see-through roof, which almost covers the ravine

Extremely dangerous Waves by Reynisfjara and Kirkjufjara black Beaches in South-Iceland!

Yet another fatal accident took place on the 2nd of August 2025, on Reynisfjara beach in South Iceland, when a 9-year-old girl drowned after the sneaker waves grasped her on this dangerous beach :( The family seems to have been stuck in the cave, and the waves reached them. The last fatal accident before this one was on the 10th of June 2022, when a foreign traveller was swept out to sea by the sneaker waves on this notorious beach. His wife got caught in the same wave but got saved. Top photo: Kirkjufjara beach Reynisfjara beach After the death of the girl, it was decided to activate th

Bárður Snæfellsás - the Mythical Protector of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland

In my 5-part series of travel-blogs about the Magical Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, I often mentioned the half troll-half man Bárður Snæfellsás - the Protector of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.   Bárður was according to Bárðar Saga Snæfellsáss the settler of this area, half a troll, and half a man, his father was half a titan, but his mother was human. Top photo: a close-up of the statue of Bárður at Arnarstapi Bárður Snæfellsás at Arnarstapi Bárður came to Iceland in the 9th century and gave the peninsula its name, Snjófellsnes peninsula, but both words "snær" and "snjór" mean snow

This is the final part of my I-V part series of travel-blogs where I invite you on a tour with me of the magical Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland.  There is so much to see and do that one travel-blog wasn't enough and the whole trip around the Snæfellsnes peninsula ended up filling five travel-blogs!  Plus side-blogs about interesting locations which I wanted to tell you more about. I hope you enjoy travelling with me around this beautiful peninsula :) Top photo: By Snæfellsjökull Stykkishólmur - the largest town on the Snæfellsnes peninsula Stykkishólmur town on Snæfellsnes In my

A Hilarious Comedy Show on the Icelandic Sagas in 75 Minutes at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík

I love writing about my ancestors the Vikings, who settled in Iceland in 874 AD give or take a few years, and I often get this question: "Where can I see Viking stuff in Iceland?". So I was thrilled to hear of a Viking comedy show in English at our concert hall Harpa called the Icelandic Sagas - the Greatest Hits in 75 minutes. On their website they described the play as being "a comedy theatre roller coaster ride through all 40 of the epic Icelandic Sagas" and that is exactly what you will get :) Unfortunately, this show isn't running anymore, as I would have loved seeing it one more ti
