The Viking Village in the Viking Town Hafnarfjörður in SW-Iceland

Hafnarfjörður is a lovely town near Iceland's capital city, Reykjavík, where I live. It is sometimes called the Town in the Lava, as it is built on a lava field. When you walk through this town, you will see big lava rocks in some of the backyards.  Hafnarfjörður has also been called the Town of the Elves, as it is well known that the Icelandic elves (hidden people) live in lava rocks. But in this travel blog, I am calling it the Viking town.   Top photo: Fjörukráin at the Viking village in Hafnarfjörður Hotel Viking at the Viking village I have written several travel blogs about

Þakgil and Remundargil Canyons -  2 magical Hidden Gems in South Iceland

The beautiful Þakgil and Remundargil canyons are two hidden gems in South Iceland. They are located in a less-visited area close to the very busy Vík and Reynisfjara black beach on Iceland's south coast. The road to these beautiful canyons will take you through amazing terrain. The drive up to Þakgil canyon is about 15 km, and it takes 30 minutes without stopping. Top photo: Þakgil camping area   Inside Stórihellir cave  I, on the other hand, am always looking for interesting things to write about, so I made several stops on the way. Amongst the stops I made was one at Stórhellir cav

Iceland's sparkling Ice Diamond Beach on Breiðamerkursandur

The most popular tour in Iceland is the Golden Circle tour, but did you know Iceland has a beach with glistening ice chunks that sparkle like diamonds? I try to go there every year to check out the "latest" versions of the ice diamonds glistening on the black beach, Breiðamerkursandur. Visiting this beautiful beach is one of my favourite things to do here in Iceland! The first photo is Iurie's photo; he is, of course, a genius with the camera and leads photo tours in Iceland. You can see my amateur photos below ;) But the ice diamonds on the beach are so breathtaking that everybody can tak

Landmannalaugar - a Geothermal Tour with breathtaking Rhyolite Mountains

Landmannalaugar is one of Iceland's hidden pearls, a truly magical place in the highland of Iceland. I have visited Landmannalaugar several times on a guided tour. My following account is of one of my visits to Landmannalaugar: Top photo: Hiking in Landmannalaugar Hjálparfoss waterfall Hjálparfoss waterfall   Our first stop was at Árborg in Árnes, a gas station and café up-country in South Iceland, where we bought food to eat in Landmannalaugar. Then we drove further on into Þjórsárdalur valley and stopped by the beautiful waterfall Hjálparfoss, Help's Falls.  Hjálparfoss runs in the

The Historical Reykholt in West-Iceland & Snorri Sturluson - the most influential Icelander

In this travel blog, I want to tell you about Reykholt in West Iceland, which is one of the most historically significant sites in Iceland. Reykholt was the home of Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241) from 1206 to 1241. Snorri was quite possibly the most influential Icelander ever. He was a Saga writer, politician, historiographer, and poet. Fellsströnd and Skarðsströnd in West Iceland - the Saga Circle of Iceland

North of the popular Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, you will find a much less travelled peninsula called Fellsströnd and Skarðsströnd. This beautiful off-the-beaten-path peninsula is often referred to as the Saga Circle of Iceland. The Saga Circle of Iceland has many historical sites well worth visiting. I explored the peninsula for 2 days and stayed for one night at the Vogur country lodge in Fellsströnd. The Golden Circle and Floating in the Secret Lagoon at Flúðir in South-Iceland

One of the perks of being a travel blogger is joining guided tours and writing about them. I joined an enjoyable tour, the Golden Circle tour, combined with a very relaxing float and massage in a secret lagoon in South Iceland! I was picked up at the BSÍ, bus terminal in Reykjavík at 2 pm. I was expecting a small bus to pick me up, but was delighted to see the luxury jeep that was going to be driving me around for the day :) Top photo: the Secret Lagoon The late Ólafur from Travis, Iceland, by his super jeep - he was a very entertaining and fun guide, and we stayed in touch for years, a

A Visit to the Ice Cave Tunnel in Langjökull Glacier in Iceland - Into the Glacier

Now, this is an extraordinary tour - a visit to the man-made ice cave in Europe's second-largest glacier, Langjökull glacier. The cave opened on June 1st, 2015, and I visited it for the first time on June 11th, 2015. This is quite an exceptional experience - to walk hundreds of metres inside a glacier into the largest man-made ice cave tunnel in the world! Top photo: inside the Ice Cave Tunnel in Langjökull Glacier Inside the Ice Cave Tunnel in Langjökull Glacier   The pick-up for my tour started at 8:30 am, but as I live in Reykjavík, I met up with the Reykjavík Excursions bus at our

Drangurinn in Drangshlíð and the Elves in South Iceland - Icelandic Folklore

A peculiar rock stands alone in South Iceland below the beautiful Eyjafjöll mountains, with a couple of elf stories linked to it. And seeing that I am a great fan of elf stories, I want to tell you about the elves in this rock, which is called Drangurinn in Drangshlíð.  I found this folklore in Þjóðsögur Jóns Árnasonar - the Compilation of Folklore by Jón Árnason and translated it into English: "In Drangshlíð by Eyjafjöll mountains, there is a big rock in the field, almost the height of 20 men. On one side of it, there are caves and big spaces beneath it, and the farmers kept their hay and
