Mývatn Part III - Grjótagjá aka the Love Cave, Stóragjá & the Mývatn Naturebaths

The privately owned Grjótagjá rift is very close to Dimmuborgir. It is half-filled with thermal water and is one of Iceland's best-known caves.  Grjótagjá has two entrances and steps leading down to it. People used to bathe in it, with women on one side and men on the other. During the eruption of the close-by Mt. Krafla in 1975-1984, the temperature of the water in Grjótagjá rose so much (up to 60-70 degrees C) that it couldn't be used for bathing. The water temperature has cooled a bit, but it is still too hot for bathing. Top photo: inside Grjótagjá cave Grjótagjá cave I dipped my

The amazing Mývatn Area in North Iceland - Part I

Mývatn in North Iceland is my all-time favourite area in Iceland and should not be missed while visiting my country. The Mývatn area is called Mývatnssveit, and we Icelanders refer to it as either Mývatnssveit or Mývatn, the former being more correct in Icelandic, so to speak. At Mývatn, you can, for example, walk on the rim of the pseudocraters Skútustaðagígar, see beautiful lava pillars by Lake Mývatn, walk through amazing lava formations in Dimmuborgir - Dark Fortress, visit a cave with geothermal water, and bathe in the Mývatn Naturebaths. Mývatn in North Iceland - Part II - Dimmuborgir Lava Field & the Cave of the Yule Lads

Dimmuborgir - the Dark Fortress at Mývatn is a true wonder of nature. Dimmuborgir consists of huge lava rock formations that make you feel like you stepped into another world - a world of fairy tales. In this travel blog, I will walk you through this area. Please join me :) The formation of these extraordinary lava pillars stems from molten lava forming a lava pond during the eruptions of Lúdentarborgir and Þrengslaborgir, a row of craters some 2,300 years ago. The Magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland - Part IV- Mt. Kirkjufell & Grundarfjörður and much more

This is part IV in my series of travel blogs about the magical Snæfellsnes peninsula, in which I show you the most interesting places on the peninsula in chronological order. There is so much to see and do here on the peninsula that I have had to add five travel blogs with several side blogs. Top photo: By Snæfellsjökull glacier By the roots of Snæfellsjökull glacier I hope this travel blog style guide will help you get to know my favourite peninsula in Iceland and that you will enjoy it even more when you visit it yourself :) If you want to start travelling with me from the beginning,

Djúpalónssandur & Dritvík - the Black Lava Pearl Beach on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Djúpalónssandur - the Black Lava Pearl Beach is a beautiful place to visit, like so many other sights on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. It is like stepping into a lava wonderland. I have written a travel guide in chronological order, in 5 parts, about the Snæfellsnes peninsula. Since Djúpalónssandur is one of the peninsula's major attractions, I think it deserves a special travel blog where I tell you more about its history and folklore connected to this popular beach.   Top photo: people entering Djúpalónssandur via Nautastígur path The information sign in the parking lot Here on the Dj

The Magical Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland - Arnarstapi and Hellnar

In this travel blog, I am going to show you the beautiful Arnarstapi, which is one of my favourite places on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The extraordinary columnar basalt and cliff formations here are breathtakingly beautiful, and one of Iceland's most stunning natural harbours is at Arnarstapi. I have written a 5-part travel blog series about the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and this is a side-blog about Arnarstapi, as there is so much to see and do here. Natural Mineral Springs on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in West Iceland

On the ever so popular Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, you will not only find breathtaking nature, waterfalls, volcanic craters, a glacier, beautiful mountains and rock formations, gorges, pink and black beaches, but also natural mineral springs. I love one in particular, where the water is very pure, tasty, and bubbly. It has the long name Rauðamelsölkelda.
