A Helicopter Ride to the Volcanic Eruption in Mt. Fagradalsfjall in SW-Iceland

Finally, I was able to see the volcanic eruption in Mt. Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes peninsula with my own eyes. We had booked a helicopter flight at the start of the eruption, but it wasn't until 7 weeks later that it was our turn, as demand for flights to the volcano was so high. The people on the long waiting list were mostly Icelanders, as no tourists were visiting Iceland due to COVID-19 restrictions. We all wanted to see the volcanic eruptions, and hikers were flocking to the volcano. With my mother-in-law in the helicopter In my last travel blog, I told you about the earthquak

The Volcanic Eruption in Mt. Fagradalsfjall and Geldingadalir in SW-Iceland

After 3 weeks of almost constant earthquakes, approximately 40,000 of them to be exact, which were driving us crazy here on the south-west corner of Iceland, we finally got a volcanic eruption at Geldingadalir by Mt. Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanesskagi peninsula. A crater opened in Geldingadalir, which spewed out primitive molten lava 17 km from the Earth's mantle, something that is quite out of the ordinary - but then this volcanic eruption is out of the ordinary, as there has not been a volcanic eruption in this location for some 6,000 years! The volcanic eruption When I say we fina

A Visit to Kollsvík Cove in the Westfjords - the smallest Settlement in Iceland

Látravík and Breiðavík are well-known coves in the Westfjords of Iceland, but both of them belong to the Útvikur coves.  Many people have heard about Látrabjarg, the largest seabird cliff in my country, in the vicinity, which is the best place to photograph a puffin in Iceland. I have shown you both Látrabjarg, Látravík, and Breiðavík in my travel blogs, but there is yet another cove that belongs to the Útvíkur coves, the remote and beautiful Kollsvík cove. Ancient Archaeological Viking Ruins I have visited on my Travels in Iceland

In this travel blog, I want to show you the Viking ruins - the archaeological sites where settlement-age farms have been discovered in Iceland. I have visited several such archaeological sites during my many years of travels in my country. I am often asked about Viking ruins, so I have written this travel blog as a reference for anyone interested in the Vikings and their ruins. Most of our Viking-era artifacts are still buried, but we have discovered many ruins and pagan graves across Iceland. I must reiterate, though, that this is a travel blog and by no means a professional article ;) O

The amazing Lambafellsklofi Rift on the Reykjanesskagi Peninsula in South-West Iceland

One of the many spectacular sights on the Reykjanes peninsula in southwest Iceland is the mystical Lambafellsklofi rift in Mt. Lambafell, which most likely dates back to the second-to-last glacial period.  It is a sight worth seeing, as Mt. Lambafell here almost appears to have been ripped in two by dislocation or tension fractures. And it is possible to hike inside the narrow rift. Top photo: Hiking inside the Lambafellsklofi rift A massive lava rock in the vast lava field This whole area is volcanic, and you will see volcanoes and lava fields left and right. The lovely Country Hotel Hraunsnef in West Iceland and its beautiful Surroundings

As a Mother’s Day gift, I invite my mother on a girls’ trip to a hotel in the countryside instead of giving her flowers. I invited her to the lovely family-run farm hotel Hraunsnef in Norðurárdalur valley in Borgarfjörður, where we had a wonderful stay. Both of us love the beautiful Borgarfjörður, which is not far from Reykjavík, where we live, so it makes for a perfect one-night outing. Opening photo: the view from the terrace in front of our room The "turf house" at Hraunsnef It had been on my agenda to visit Hraunsnef for years, and I had ogled it every time we passed it on my way up

The Peculiar Rock, Steðji-Staupasteinn, in Hvalfjörður in Southwest Iceland

In the beautiful Hvalfjörður fjord in SW-Iceland, you will find a very peculiar, almost 3 meters high rock called Steðji. This rock is in the shape of a goblet, and the hermit living in it is the Protector of the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel. Other names for Steðji are Staupasteinn, Prestur, and Karlinn í Skeiðhóli - the Old man in Skeiðhóll hill. Top photo: greeting the man in Staupasteinn   Staupasteinn and the parking space - the road is closed further on, so you have to turn around. Before the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel opened in 1998, the road via Hvalfjörður was part of the Ring Road, and

The lovely little Hrunalaug Natural Hot Pool in South Iceland

One of the many delights of Iceland, and a particular favourite of mine, is being able to take a dip in a natural hot pool in the middle of nature.   Soaking in hot pools is very popular amongst tourists and locals alike, and few things beat soaking in a lovely warm pool in the middle of a bright summer night after a long day of travelling in Iceland.  Top photo: Hrunalaug Hrunalaug pool I have already shown you the many natural hot pools in the Westfjords of Iceland and a couple of natural hot springs in West Iceland in other travel blogs.   In this travel blog, I want to tell you a l

The Peculiar Rútshellir Cave in South Iceland

In South Iceland, by the beautiful Eyjafjöll mountains, several man-made caves can be found. One of them is just by the Ring Road, and thus easily accessible. The cave is located in a peculiar, big tuff pillar of rock. There are ancient habitations in the rock and a cave called Rútshellir, the Cave of Rútur.  Once when I visited Rútshellir, I found a dead sheep inside the cave - the smell was overwhelming. When we passed Rútshellir on our way back two days later, a ram was standing proudly on the top of the turf sheepcote. It was quite a magnificent sight. There are two man-made caves
