Troll Expeditions

We did this Tour with Troll and our fabulous guide Karin! We had a wonderful group to travel with and Karin took such great care of everyone throughout the adventure. There were so many wonderful activities (Whale watching, Horseback riding, Glacier Hike, Ice Cave, Lava Cave, Hot Springs Spa), We experienced beautiful scenery including more rainbows that I can count waterfalls, black beaches, mountains, Northern Lights on two different nights. The accommodations were nice and staff at them helpful. Karin (our tour guide) knew so much about Iceland! The history, locations to go, her family history all made the rides from location to location so much fun. She was funny, helped everyone and was a friend to all. We had a great group from all over (India, China, United States: Florida, Texas, Ohio, Wisconsin) and we all had a great time getting to know each other. I highly recommend this trip for anyone thinking about experiencing Iceland!

Our tour exceeded expectations! The accommodation was simple but always clean, quiet and comfortable. Some of the hotel locations were stunningly beautiful and peaceful. The tour itinerary was great and there was a good balance between distances travelled with many stops for activity, walks, sightseeing and exploring. The activities included in the tour were excellent and we also opted to pay for extras, all of which were good value. For 6 of the 8 days Kristin was our guide, he was at all times incredibly informative, knowledgeable and generous in sharing insights about the landscapes, the country, and the people through incidental stories and extraneous intel. With Kristinn it felt very much like we were on a privileged ‘insider’s’ guide to Iceland. Jon took over as our guide for the last two days and he was extremely helpful to us. I highly recommend Troll’s 8 day tour! Some suggestions…..the start of the tour felt a bit strange. All fellow tour goers were collected from across Reykjavik and then off we headed to our first tourist stop. So no proper opportunity for introductions until the evening which was weird knowing we would be travelling in close proximity for at least 6 days. I would recommend the tour itinerary should include a stop somewhere as soon as all participants were onboard in order to give all the chance to say hi and make basic introductions. This would help us to more quickly feel ‘connected’ as a tour group. Another suggestion, each evening it would be handy to be emailed the next day’s itinerary and some details about the various stops we’d be making including names of key places and expected weather. It would help to know how physically active we’d be when preparing for the day ahead. Likewise, approx times for lunch and other scheduled breaks would be helpful. There were times when we grabbed quick coffees ‘on the run’ only to find we were stopping again 10-15 minutes later for a longer period.

If you are undecided about doing the snorkeling trip, don't be! You should just do it. The experience was well worth the cost, and we were in great, knowledgeable hands from beginning to end. Yes, the suits can be uncomfortable, but both of our guides made sure we were sufficiently buckled in to stay dry but not too, too tight, checking in frequently before and while in the water. For example, Vicki noticed I was struggling a bit about midway through with coughing. She checked my neck band and loosened it a bit, adjusting in the midst of our adventure. We drank the lava-filtered glacier water, marveled at the wonders of our earth, and made especially poignant memories on our last day in Iceland, all with photos our guide took that were provided quickly after the trip for us to download. My partner and I had no experience diving or snorkeling and both found it to be easy and far less intimidating than we thought it would be. I'm super comfortable swimming, but my partner is not. They run through a short safety test to make sure you are going to be okay in the water before the group launches and there is a bail point shortly into the snorkel if you find yourself freaking out. I am short and round and my partner is tall and lean. The suits definitely fit him better, since the legs and arms on mine were real long. But it all evened out in the water. Walking on land was difficult, but doable. Pro Tips: parking will likely be a challenge and/or will take time. We did not plan well enough for that aspect. Make sure to give yourself an additional 10-20 minutes to get parked and over to the meeting spot. If you are a hot person like me (I am always hot, especially my feet), you probably don't need to go heavy on your baselayer. I wore a thin merino wool top and thin wool tights with lightweight wool socks for my feet and was pretty toasty the whole time. Anything thicker and I would have been overheating well before we got in the water.
