Because of how it connects the harbor, downtown area, and major shopping streets in the capital, and because it serves many bus routes, most visitors to Reykjavik will spend plenty of time admiring and traveling through Laekjartorg Square.

Reykjavik is thought to be Iceland's first permanent settlement, and Laekjartorg was soon established as a bustling marketplace for farmers. Its name, meaning "brook square," pays homage to the stream that once flowed here into the sea.

This stream, which later became a canal, was part of Reykjavik's infrastructure into the 20th Century before becoming an underground feature to make space for modern roads and buildings.

As the Industrial Revolution took over Iceland, the square became an integral, central part of the growing city. Today, Laekjartorg Square is a vibrant public space, rich in cultural significance, and a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
