Why are foreign men sending Icelandic women creepy messages?
The female staff at Guide to Iceland have been getting a lot of friend requests from foreign guys recently. I'm not so surprised, we've got a pretty talented (and good looking) team, but foreign men seem to be particularly interested in Icelandic women these days. And apparently it's mostly down to one, completely made up, article. From time to time I get some random friend requests on facebook, either from accounts that aren't real or from people that I have simply never met. I also get a bunch of messages through Guide to Iceland, mostly from some cool people that want t
Iceland's football team is back home :)
In case you were wondering how the Icelandic football team was greeted when they came back home yesterday, you can find your answer here above. After driving through downtown Reykjavík on a double decker bus, the team arrived at Arnarhóll, where most people have been watching the games, and did a little HÚ chant with the crowd. The earth trembled and the echo sounded like fireworks (I'm told by my sister, I wasn't actually there - I stopped by but then went to a bbq in the stunning sunshine - thinking I would hear the noise anyway). It sure does sound impressive! Pretty good greeting fo
Iceland is out of EURO 2016, But We're Still Celebrating!
Iceland is out of the European Championship after being defeated by the host team France. Congratulations France, and congratulations Iceland on making it this far and making your country proud. At half time the score was 4-0 for France and it didn't look good for the Icelandic team, I was scared we'd get our asses whooped and sincerely hoped Iceland could get a goal or two in and wouldn't get any more goals on us from France. Fortunately Iceland got 2 goals in (the only team to score 2 goals against France in the competition!) - but unfortunately France also got one more goal in. Neverthe
Iceland's Viking battlecry may help beat the French!
Iceland has a way of celebrating victory in football. Foreign media calls it Iceland's battlecry, Iceland's Viking Chant, Iceland's Viking war cry or Iceland's Clapping Chant, although in Iceland mostly people just call it HÚ. HÚ seems to be a bit of a favourite amongst the foreign nations watching the European Championships... some news channels have even accredited the chant to be the reason for Iceland's good going on the Euro 2016! (Personally, I don't really get why it's become so big, it's just a football chant that starts slowly and gets faster - don't all teams do that??) It'
Tjarnarbíó: Independent theatre in Reykjavík - theatre shows in English!
What's the Icelandic theatre scene like? Learn about the independent theatre scene in Iceland here. Do you want to get to know more about Iceland's art culture than most people do? Do you want to meet the local people, get an insight into Icelandic daily life and perhaps get an insight into the Icelandic mentality? The best way to do so is by visiting the theatre. And then the independent theatre Tjarnarbíó is your best bet. During summertime the biggest theatres in Iceland, the National Theatre and the City Theatre go on a summer holiday. These two theatres normally show big classic prod
Iceland beats England celebrations and aftermath
Yesterday after Iceland secured its place in the round of 8 in the European Championships, a street party erupted in Reykjavík! Long after the match was over, people were dancing and singing into the bright and clear summer night. I shot a few videos just to give people a glance of what it was like. After having lived in Brazil and experienced the football street parties there, it didn't feel much different (except I was a lot more involved this time around - sorry Corinthians, but Iceland's win got me a little more excited!) Drums, singing, dancing, fireworks, beer, more dancing, more sin
Iceland beats England 2-1!!!!!! Iceland is through to the round of 8!!!!!
2-1! Iceland and England just competed in the round of 16 game. And as (Icelanders) predicted, Iceland won! What a game!!! Did you watch this beauty???!??!!! Ok, so, half of this blog is written in advance (all the sensible sentences where I don't screw up people's names and timings) - the other half is written approximately as long as it took me to celebrate briefly and walking home to write it (and stock up on booze). So, approximately 10 minutes later (Reykjavík's small). That's the same half that's written after a bottle of bubbly and a beer (the bubbly was finished
Iceland is through to the round of 16 in EURO 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!
Iceland 2, Austria 1. It's official, Iceland is through to the round of 16 in the European Championship 2016. I'm writing this in a state of elation and incredulity - Iceland scored the first goal and by half-time the score was 1-0. Austria scored in the second half and the score was 1-1 until THE VERY LAST SECOND OF THE GAME! That's when Iceland managed to score another goal, so the final outcome was 2-1. The last goal was scored at 94 minutes into the game (there were additional 4 minutes given to the time) and as soon as the ball was inside the goal, the game was over. Abso
Will Iceland get through to the round of 16 in EURO 2016?
Everyone is talking about EURO 2016 in Iceland. That includes people that dislike football. Tomorrow Iceland plays its last game in Group F, against Austria. If Iceland wins, it has almost a guaranteed place in the round of 16, but not quite. It all depends on the other game that's taking place tomorrow, at the same time, between Portugal and Hungary. Iceland has had two draws so far, 1-1 when it played Portugal and 1-1 when it played Hungary. Portugal has also had two draws, besides the draw with Iceland they had a 0-0 draw when playing Austria. Hungary is the only country to have won a
Iceland in UEFA EURO 2016!
Last night Iceland's male football team debuted in a major championship: The quarter-finals of the European Championships. Iceland is a country with a very small population. VERY small population. So when the Icelandic (male) football team qualified for the European Championships, the nation got pretty excited. Iceland is the smallest nation (with only 330 thousand inhabitants) to participate in the major finals. Iceland's male football team is currently number 34 in FIFA's world ranking list. Last night, Iceland played their first ever game in a major championship. (That is, the male tea
