Things to See in Laekjargata

One of Laekjargata's key attractions is Laekjartorg Square which often hosts art by local artists. During the holiday season, it becomes home to the giant lit-up sculpture of the mythical creature Yule Cat, or Jólakötturinn, a beloved figure of Christmas in Iceland. Nearby, you'll find a tourist information center as well as the District Court. Across the street is the House of Government, a building with a storied past as a former prison. Additionally, Lækjargata is home to the headquarters of the Reykjavik Art Festival.  

Menntaskolinn i Reykjavik, the oldest education institution in the country still in operation, is also located on this street. It was built in 1845 and traces its roots to Skalholtsskoli in the 11th century. Many famous Icelanders went to this school and it was the location of the national parliament from 1845-81.
