The remote island Flatey

Have you ever visited some of the islands around Iceland? I recommend you do and there are several beautiful islands possible to visit. One of them is Flatey island, located in Breidafjordur bay on the northwestern part of Iceland. The island is about two kilometers long and one kilometer wide and is quite flat almost without any hills, so therefore the name 'Flatey', meaning "flat island". Flatey is the largest island among a cluster of about forty other small islands in the area.

If you want to go to Flatey you need to take the ferry from either Stykkishólmur or Brjánslækur and please note that no cars are allowed on the island so you have to leave your car at one of those spots. This remote little island has only one dusty road leading from the ferry dock through the so called old village. The old village consists of several beautifully kept old and restored houses in cheerful colours.   

You can take a walk around the whole island and enjoy the wild birdlife which is in abundance there, mostly migratory birds like puffins and or the arctic terns and more.  

The atmosphere in Flatey is very relaxed and everything is very quiet and tranquil, even the sheep are unusually relaxed walking around on the main road and chilling in the backyards. 

On Flatey there is a beautiful hotel with particularly inviting and cozy atmosphere offering great choice of local food and beautifully decorated rooms. 

If you stay at Hotel Flatey birdsong, quietness and beautiful view is included in the price. The hotel is only open during summer time from June until late August. The ferry only stops at Flatey during summertime so if you want to visit this tiny little remote island you have to go then.  

If you are staying at the hotel they offer transportation of your luggage from the harbour or if you want to transport it yourself you can grab one of the wheelbarrows from the harbour and transport your luggage like the locals often do.
