An interesting Hike into the craggy Kotagil Gorge in North Iceland

I love visiting gorges on my travels in Iceland, especially gorges with rivers running through them. As that means that you will find a waterfall at the end of the gorge. Kotagil gorge in Norðurádalur valley in Akrahreppur county (I know this is a mouthful), up in North Iceland, is such a gorge. Furthermore, it is a very special gorge, as it is one of two places in Norðurárdalur listed on the Natural Heritage Register. And you will see why when you visit it.  Top photo: by Kotárfoss waterfall in Kotagil with my father-in-law   Kotagil gorge The name of the gorge, Kotagil, means the

The unique Phenomenon Pseudocraters in Iceland

I have recently written a travel blog about my favourite volcanic craters in Iceland. Now I want to show you an interesting phenomenon: pseudocraters, which can be found in very few places in the world: Iceland, Hawaii, one in the Azores islands, and the Athabasca Valles region of Mars, as far as I know. Top photo: Skútustaðagígar pseudo craters Skútustaðagígar on a sunny autumn day in 2024 I have often heard that Iceland is a feast for geologists, and the pseudocraters are for sure a valuable addition to that feast.    These rootless craters form when piping-hot, thin-flowing molten

The spectacular Katla Ice Cave in South Iceland

In my travel blogs over the years, I have written about my visits to a couple of seasonal ice caves in Iceland, which form in the winter in Vatnajökull, our largest glacier. In 2018, I visited a spectacular ice cave near Vík village in South Iceland for the first time. It is called the Katla ice cave and is located in the Kötlujökull glacier, a ruggedly beautiful icefall of Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland's fourth largest glacier.  Here we are in the territory of the most dreaded volcano in Iceland - the subglacial Katla itself! The colourful Þeistareykir Geothermal Area in North Iceland

In my travel blogs over the years, I have shown you several geothermal areas in Iceland, as I love visiting these hot spots in my country. There is one colourful geothermal area in North Iceland that is off the beaten path and less well known than the most popular in the region. It is called Þeistareykir and is well worth a visit. Þeistareykir is a very active fumarole area with clay pools and solfataras. Let's have a look at it, and I will throw in a few stories about this area as well. A Local's Experience of the Blue Lagoon in Iceland

The Blue Lagoon is one of the best-known and most popular places to visit in Iceland. Being an Icelander, I have visited the Blue Lagoon many, many times through the years, and have always enjoyed my visit. Top photo: enjoying a refreshing drink in the Blue Lagoon Soaking in the Blue Lagoon   I have not visited the Blue Lagoon since the volcanic activity started on the Reykjanes peninsula. But my last visit was with a group of Finnish teenagers and their group leaders.  We arrived at the Blue Lagoon at 18:30 and stayed for 4 hours. The sun was shining, and at the end of the day, th

Soaking in the Geosea Geothermal Sea baths in Húsavík

New geothermal sea baths, Geosea, have opened on the Húsavíkurhöfði cape in North Iceland. I had seen some beautiful photos of the sea baths and knew that they would be a great addition to the already flourishing Whale-watching capital of Iceland. I was very eager to see them, so we travelled up north to try them out. I can describe my experience with one word - heavenly :) Top photo: Soaking in Geosea geothermal sea baths   Geosea geothermal sea baths in Húsavík The infinity view from the new geothermal sea baths is breathtaking, and it fills me with such serenity as I soak in the

Arnarfjörður Fjord in the Westfjords of Iceland - the Sea Monster Fjord of Iceland!

On one of my visits to the Westfjords of Iceland, I visited Arnarfjörður, the second-longest fjord in the Westfjords. It is believed that nowhere else in Iceland have there been more sightings of sea monsters than in this beautiful fjord in Iceland's mysterious Westfjords. We Icelanders have known about the sea monsters ever since the Vikings settled Iceland around 874. Throughout the centuries, there have been over 4,000 recorded sightings of sea and lake monsters all around Iceland!  Top photo: Admiring the view Dynjandi waterfall   Many of the sea monsters have been seen in Arnarf

A wonderful Tour to Þórsmörk Valley in South Iceland with Midgard Adventure

I thought it was time to have some adventure in my life, so I contacted Midgard Adventure and asked to join their Þórsmörk Valley - Super Jeep Day Tour. Some of the staff of Guide to Iceland had joined one of their Mystery Super Jeep Tour - South Coast or the Highland, and I had seen photos of the spectacular red super jeeps, so I was eager to be a part of this action. I opted for a summer tour to Þórsmörk valley - a beautiful pearl of nature in South Iceland, an oasis nestling between three glacier caps, Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindafjallajökull. Eyjafjallajökull, which erup

A Local's favourite Volcanic Craters in Iceland

Iceland is a volcanic island, and around the country, you will find some 130 volcanoes. Most of them are inactive, and you can visit the volcanic craters, some of which are lake-filled. One of them is even filled with warm, whitish, opaque geothermal water in which you can bathe, like Víti, the explosion crater in the Askja caldera, in my photos above and below. In this travel blog, I am going to show you the favourite craters that I visited on my travels in Iceland. And in the past few years, new craters have formed during volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula. Top photo: Víti
