A Local's Favourite Caves in Iceland

In the past few years, I have taken up a new interest - visiting the caves of Iceland. And I have discovered the most colourful lava tubes in different parts of my country, as well as extraordinarily beautiful ice caves that envelop you in all shades of blue. In this travel blog, I want to show you my favourite caves in Iceland. Along with many other interesting caves in Iceland. Top photo: Raufarhólshellir lava cave 1. A List of the beautiful Icelandic Turf Houses, I have visited on my Travels in Iceland

I want to show you, travellers in my country, our old architectural heritage - the turf houses of Iceland, which are a passion of mine. I am often asked where the turf houses are located, which ones are the 'original' turf houses, which are later-time turf houses, and which are turf outhouses. In this travel blog, I am going to show you all of the original turf houses - the turf churches, the later-time turf houses, hypothetical turf houses, turf outhouses, turf fishermen's huts, turf sheds, and more turf structures, which I have visited on my travels in my country. Have you met the angry Ghost at Gunnuhver Mud Pool in Reykjanes in SW-Iceland?

In my last travel blog, I told you about the colourful Seltún geothermal area on the Reykjanes peninsula in SW Iceland. There is another very interesting geothermal area on this peninsula that is well worth a visit: the Gunnuhver geothermal area (named after a female ghost!). Top photo: Gunnuhver Gunnuhver and the information sign Gunnuhver is the collective name for this geothermal area, named after the angry female ghost Guðrún, or 'Gunna' for short. Here, you will find fumaroles, steam vents, and mud pools, and you will even risk getting lost amidst the steam.  This can make visi

Seltún - the colourful Geothermal Area at Krýsuvík on the Reykjanes Peninsula in SW-Iceland

You don't have to go far from Reykjavík to see colourful geothermal areas. I have already told you about the Hengill geothermal area in a previous travel blog,  which is only half an hour's drive from the capital city. Another colourful geothermal area is Seltún, located beneath Sveifluháls on the Reykjanes, peninsula in SW Iceland. Seltún is located some 40 km away from Reykjavík. A breathtaking view from the Top of Mt. Eldfell Volcano in the Westman Islands

In this travel blog, I am going to show you the maroon Eldfell volcano - the Fire Mountain - which was created in the volcanic eruption of 1973, in the Westman Islands. The eruption began right next to Vestmannaeyjabær, the town on Heimaey Island, and all the island's inhabitants had to flee to the mainland of Iceland. Top photo: on top of the Eldfell volcano Mt. Vestmannaeyjar, the volcanic Westman Islands in South Iceland, are an archipelago south of Iceland, and a really interesting place to visit. A volcanic eruption next to the town on Heimaey Island in 1973 forced all the inhabitants to flee to the mainland. In this travel blog, I want to tell you about one of the heroes of the Westman Islands, Guðlaugur Friðþórsson, and tell you why there is a free-standing bathtub in the open on Heimaey Island. Fróðárheiði Heath & the Fróðá Wonders - Icelandic Folklore: Ghosts and Zombies in the Viking Age!

Fróðárheiði (361 m) is one of the heaths at Snæfellsfjallgarður on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The 14 km-long road across the heath is now fully paved. Given the bad weather in this area, this heath is often impassable during the winter. Extraordinary happenings took place at Fróðá, known as the Fróðárundrin or the Fróðá Wonders. These wondrous events occurred around the year 1000 AD and are recounted in the Eyrbyggja Saga, one of the oldest Icelandic Sagas set on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. I roughly translated it from Eyrbyggja Saga, as follows: Top photo: Fróðá river by Fróðá farm

The Horrific Viking Battles in Skagafjörður, North Iceland

In my last travel blog, I told you about my ancestors, the Vikings, and Viking activities in Iceland today. Now I would like to show you some of the locations of the biggest Viking battles in Iceland. This is a travel blog about my travels in my country, Iceland, focusing on the better-known Viking areas in Sturlunga. Top photo: the Holy Rood at Haugsnes Viking swords - artwork at the Kakalaskáli exhibition, which I recommend visiting In Skagafjörður in North Iceland, you will quickly find yourself on the trail of the Vikings. The Icelandic Vikings - a List of Viking Activities and Viking Museums in Iceland

Our foreign visitors often ask me where they can find Viking "stuff" in Iceland and what Viking activities they can take part in during their stay in my country. So I decided to write a travel blog listing the Viking activities, Viking exhibitions, and Viking museums I know about and have taken part in here in Iceland.  Top photo: The Viking club Rimmugýgur in Iceland The Viking festival in Hafnarfjörður The Norwegian Vikings arrived in Iceland in open Viking ships in the 9th century and settled on this cold, volcanic island in the north. Here, they had to fight the elements and each
