Glacier Hike & Ice Climbing on Sólheimajökull glacier in South Iceland

At last, I joined a glacier hike tour on Sólheimajökull glacier in South Iceland. Even though I have lived here in Iceland my whole life, I had never gone glacier hiking before. I have been inside the ice cave tunnel in Langjökull a couple of times, visited the ice caves, and walked to the edge of several glaciers, but never really experienced a glacier up close and personal until now. Join me on my only glacier hike :) Top photo: hikers on the glacier Sólheimajökull glacier   Sólheimajökull, which translates into Sun World Glacier, is an icefall or glacial tongue that extends down

The lovely little Village Eyrarbakki on the South Coast of Iceland & Húsið - the House

I often visit the pretty little villages on the south coast of Iceland, Stokkseyri and Eyrarbakki, where the pace of life is very different from that of Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, where I live. In this travel blog, I will be showing you what I find so alluring about Eyrarbakki village, which has around 602 inhabitants. Back in the 18th century, Eyrarbakki was a very vibrant community and served as a centre for fashion and culture in Iceland. Here you could find one of Iceland's biggest ports and trading centres, serving the south coast of Iceland all the way to Mt. Lómagnúpur.

The Lava Tunnel: The Extraordinary Raufarhólshellir Lava Cave in South Iceland

Raufarhólshellir lava cave - the Lava Tunnel - is one of the extraordinary lava caves in Iceland. It has been made more accessible to visitors and reopened with guided tours in June 2017.   It is such a delight visiting this 4th-longest lava cave in Iceland. Join me on a tour of the cave. On a guided tour of Raufarhólshellir cave I had visited Raufarhólshellir cave a couple of times before a footbridge and stairs were added, and I am so glad it is now so accessible and easy to visit. I once showed it to a girlfriend from London, and she was all but traumatized after the visit, as she w

The remote Strandir in Iceland - Stillness & Sorcery

Join me on a day tour of one of the remotest areas of Iceland - the scenic Strandir.  While some 7,000 people live in the Westfjords Region of Iceland, 4,000 of whom live in the capital city of the Westfjords, Ísafjörður, only about 60 people (2025) live in the rural district of Árneshreppur at Strandir. In my previous travel blog, I told you about the beautiful nature and hot pools by Hotel Laugarhóll, where I stayed for the night. And showed you the lesser-known Goðafoss waterfall, which bears the same name as its famous namesake up north. Top photo: a map of the Strandir area Goðafo

Hotel Laugarhóll at Strandir - hot Pools and Sorcery in Abundance

In the remote and peaceful Strandir on the eastern part of the Westfjords region of Iceland, many a pearl of nature awaits you. On one of my visits to Strandir, I stayed for one night at Hotel Laugarhóll in Bjarnarfjörður, where you will find several of these pearls, amongst them the preserved hot pool of Guðmundur góði - Guðmundur the Good, who was the bishop at Hólar in the 13th century. I chose this family-run country hotel for its peaceful and beautiful natural surroundings. I sorely needed to soak in a hot pool and relax in nature before I set off on an 8-day exploration of the Westf

Calm Water Kayaking by Ísafjörður Town in the Westfjords - the Kayaking Centre of Iceland

I had been travelling for 5 days in the Westfjords of Iceland and had by now reached Ísafjörður - the capital city of the Westfjords. I was wondering what to do and see here, and checked out the tours available at Borea Adventures. They had several tours to choose from, amongst them a selection of kayaking tours.  I had wanted to try kayaking for the longest time, as I had seen it become an increasingly popular sport in Iceland. This was my first time kayaking, so I opted for calm-water paddling in the fjord by Ísafjörður, often called Iceland's kayaking centre. I highlight calm as this

Whale Watching from Hólmavík in the Westfjords Region of Iceland with Láki Tours

After joining several whale-watching tours in Iceland, I have become an avid whale watcher. So when I was travelling in the Westfjords Region of Iceland and heard about a new whale-watching tour in Hólmavík, I jumped at the chance of seeing some whales. We were staying in Bjarnarfjörður for the night, and one of the hotel guests had joined a whale-watching tour of Láki Tours earlier that same day. She told us about the tour and couldn't hold her excitement - on this tour, a humpback whale had put on a half-hour "show" right in front of the whale watching boat! And it even breached (jumped)

Patreksfjörður, the friendly Village in the Westfjords of Iceland

The Westfjords of Iceland are ever so beautiful, a bit off the beaten track for some, but very much worth visiting during your Iceland visit.  If tranquillity and breathtaking landscapes are what you are looking for, then the Westfjords are the place to check out. During my 8-day visit to the Westfjords of Iceland, I stayed for one night in the lovely fishing village Patreksfjörður in the southern part of the Westfjords, which is Iceland's westernmost village.  Top photo: Ráðagerði boutique hotel   Patreksfjörður village This tranquil little village has a population of about 720, mak

A Tour of Svalvogar & Kjaransbraut in the Westfjords - the most dangerous Road Construction in Iceland

Join me on a journey on the most dangerous road construction in the Westfjords of Iceland and be rewarded with the most amazing scenery. This road, which is often called Kjaransbraut - the Kjaran's Avenue, also the Svalvogar circle, is only open for a couple of months a year, and Westfjords Adventures offers guided tours on this one-lane jeep track.   Ever since I first saw photos from this scary-looking road and the ruggedly beautiful surroundings, I have wanted to experience this drive myself.
