An original way to visit Iceland
The nights are bright in Iceland from late May until the end of July, which gives travelers a unique opportunity. One brilliant way to explore Iceland is to be up and about during the night and sleep during the day.
I have met such a traveler while working in Langaholt, a guesthouse founded by my parents - now owned and run by my brother.
For few days in a row this visitor showed up in the reception about 10 am asking me if he could use the campground until the afternoon (he had a pickup truck with a truck camper). The first two mornings I just told him to go ahead and didn't give it any thought. The third morning we spoke for a while and he told me he had been traveling each night and that he had some awesome photos filled with the night-light.
I've given it some thought every now and then and I think it is a brilliant idea. This is a time of year when we have the biggest crowd of tourists - during the day at least. There is also a dusk-quality to the brightness.
The weather is often softer as the sunshine of the day usually produces sea breeze. On a hike one can hear as birds grow quiet for a couple of hours after midnight and then later enjoy the massive bird songs as the birds wake up again (hours before us humans get up). The sleeping would also happen in the warmest time of the day, making camping a lot easier.
The down side would be that restaurants and shops and visitors centers would be closed, except just before going to sleep and then maybe a short while after waking up. It would however be easy to work around that.
