The Stafkirkjan church holds significant historical value as a gift from Norway to Iceland in 2000. It commemorates the 1,000-year anniversary of Iceland's conversion to Christianity in 1000 AD by Olav Tryggvason, the King of Norway at the time.

Completed on July 30, 2000, this Christian church replicates Norway's Haltdalen Stave Church, originally constructed in the 1170s. The Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research led the replica project from 1998 to 2000.

Materials such as timber, shingles, tar, wrought iron, and the doorstep were sourced from Norway. The National Church of Norway also contributed by donating an altarpiece.

Inspired by other stave churches, a gallery was added around the outside. This structural addition enhances the church's durability against the harsh weather conditions of the Westman Islands.

The Icelandic government redeveloped the church's surroundings into a heritage area, and an Icelandic company generously shipped the church to Iceland free of charge. Collaborative efforts between Iceland and Norway throughout the project underscore the enduring bonds between the countries.

Today, Stafkirkjan church holds occasional mass and hosts events such as weddings.
