The Hvammsvik Hot Springs distinguish themselves from other hot springs by combining a spa experience with bathing in nature. The eight geothermal pools are surrounded by rocks and nestled in the hills over 1200 acres (486 hectares) of beautiful nature.

There is also a restaurant and bar on-site and a resort with a wealth of activities, such as yoga, fishing, hiking, paddle boarding, golf, northern lights hunting, and cycling. The Hvammsvik Retreat also provides four log cabins for those who want a more extended stay.

The Hvammsvik Hot Springs is open from 11:00 to 21:00.

Location of the Hvammsvik Hot Springs

The Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs are 40 miles (54.7 kilometers) northeast of Reykjavik, on the shore of Hvalfjordur. This location translates to the ‘whale fjord,’ and though it is not renowned for its whales, it is home to many birds and seals. 

There are eight hot springs at Hvammsvik.In summer, it has spectacular flora, while its waterfalls form frozen sculptures in winter.

A visit to the Hvammsvik Hot Springs can easily be included on a day trip around many other sites. Iceland’s second-tallest waterfall, Glymur, is only 10.9 miles (17.6 kilometers) away. 

Hvammsvik is also close to the Golden Circle, Iceland’s most popular sightseeing route. The legendary Thingvellir National Park is 25.2 miles (40.5 kilometers) southeast, from which you can continue onto the Geysir geothermal area and the Gullfoss waterfall.

Getting to the Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Hvammsvik have hot pools overlooking Hvalfjordur.From Reykjavik, you can easily reach the Hvammsvik Hot Springs by car. Drive north along the Ring Road, or Route 1, until you reach the Hvalfjordur tunnel. Instead of paying the toll to drive through it, turn right onto Route 47 and follow it until you see the attraction on the left.

If you are staying in Borgarnes, the largest town in West Iceland, do the exact opposite. Travel south along Route 1, left onto Route 47, and the Hvammsik Hot Springs will be on your right.

You cannot reach the Hvammsvik Hot Springs by public transport, but you can book a private tour of West Iceland and have a driver escort you here.

Activities at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Geothermal bathing is popular in Iceland.At the Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs, geothermal bathing is the main activity, and the eight hot springs are all accessible with standard admission. The pools vary in temperature, from 95 to 104 F (35 to 40 C), and size. You will also find a steam bath to relax in.

You can rent towels, swimwear, and swimming slippers for a small cost. 

Hot spring bathing, however, is just the tip of the iceberg of things to do at Hvammsvik. You are also welcome to go swimming in the ocean in summer, and there are regularly scheduled paddle-boarding sessions throughout the season. 

Paddle boarding is a popular activity in Iceland. There is a small lake where you can fish for rainbow trout if you stay at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs accommodation. Bike rentals are available for those eager to cycle the routes from the Hvammsvik hot springs, and the staff can guide you to the nearest hiking and walking trails.

Those who would prefer to relax on their retreat should book a Wim Hof breathing workshop. This practice can include cold water therapies and is excellent for those interested in mindfulness and finding inner peace. 

Other yoga workshops are offered throughout the year, and the retreat hosts occasional concerts.

Enjoy a drink at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs.Guests can enjoy food and drinks at the Hvammsvik Retreat and Hot Springs by visiting the Stormur Bistro and Bar.

Golfers will find the Brautarholt golf course 17.8 miles (28.6 kilometers) west.

Northern Lights at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs

If you are traveling and want to see the northern lights in Iceland, the Hvammsvik Hot Springs are a fantastic option. Because the pools are open until 21:00 and there are few sources of light pollution in the area, you could see the aurora borealis vividly from the comfort of the geothermal waters.

The northern lights can be seen between September and April, although you’ll have more chance to see them in midwinter when the nights are longer. For example, Iceland can experience up to 20 hours of darkness in December and January.

Of course, the sky needs to be clear, and the forecast needs to be strong for good viewing. You can check the conditions on Iceland’s weather website before booking. If you are not fortunate enough to see the northern lights in the Hvammsvik Hot Springs, you can book plenty of northern lights tours for another shot.

If you are traveling to Iceland in summer, you won’t see the aurora borealis. Instead, however, you can enjoy the Hvammsvik Hot Springs in full sunlight due to the phenomenon of the midnight sun.

Accommodation Near the Hvammsvik Hot Springs

Dusk settles on a lodge at the Hvammsvik Hot Springs.The Hvammsvik Hot Springs have four log cabins on site, all of which have modern furnishings, private kitchens and bathrooms, and breathtaking views.

The Farm House can accommodate up to nine guests, the Club House can accommodate up to seven, the Hilltop House can accommodate up to six, and the Lake House can accommodate up to four.

The first three cabins also have private hot tubs.

There are plenty of other accommodation choices in the area. Icelandair Hotel Hamar is a three-star hotel located in Borgarnes, close to a golf course.

B59 Hotel is another excellent hotel in Borgarnes, boasting a gym and daily housekeeping. While it also has private rooms, it has affordable bunks with shared facilities for travelers on a shoestring. Hotel Borgarnes is nearby and has rooms with balconies for those seeking a bit more luxury.

If you’d rather stay in South Iceland, the Golden Circle Apartments are a great choice. Though 44.2 miles (71.2 kilometers) from the Hvammsvik Hot Springs, you’ll pass through Thingvellir National Park en route.

Laugarvatn Hostel is around the same distance away and provides more budget-friendly rooms.
